\u200eTyler Perry is no stranger to generosity, but even generosity has its limits.
\u200eDuring a conversation on Kirk Franklin\u2019s \u201cDen of Kings,\u201d the media mogul opened up about the delicate balance between helping family and protecting your peace and business. When asked how he navigates the tensions that come with success, Perry was honest.

\u200e\u201cI\u2019ve had family members get mad at me cuz I wouldn\u2019t give them a million dollars,\u201d he said plainly.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u200e He explained that while he wants to support his family, there has to be a limit. A line. And sometimes, that means making tough decisions, even if it\u2019s someone you love.
\u200e
\u200eHe recalled the time he had to let his aunt go.
\u200e\u201cShe said she wanted a job. She would always call, ask for money, ask for money. I\u2019m like, \u201cOkay.\u201d I was sending the money. One day, I was like \u2018Listen, I want to help you. I want to help you build, not be welfare to you.

\u200eSo, let me give you a job, But she wasn\u2019t coming in, calling in all the time, and I was like \u2018Okay, well you got to go\u2019 because you want me to hand you the money but you don\u2019t want to work for it. See that doesn\u2019t work for me.\u201d

\u200eThat boundary-setting mindset isn\u2019t just for adults. Perry says it\u2019s something he\u2019s also instilling in his 10-year-old son through chores.

\u200e\u201cI don\u2019t believe in giving us things that are just going to handicap us. That is the worst thing you can do. And I\u2019ve had family members that I\u2019ve done that to because my mother has asked me to.\u201d

\u200eWhen his mother passed away in 2009, Perry drew a line in the sand. He sent letters to relatives who had grown dependent on his support, saying

\u200e\u201d Listen, you\u2019ve got 60 days to become gainfully employed because I\u2019m not going to keep supporting you like this.\u201d

\u200eAnd it worked.
\u200e
\u200e\u201cThey all got jobs. And they weren\u2019t even jobs where they\u2019re making a lot of money, but it was a job. It was something else for them to do to feel some pride in. That\u2019s the same thing I would want somebody to do for me.\u201d
\u200e\u201cIf you\u2019re trying to build a business to carry everybody in your family through, that\u2019s one thing. And if you\u2019re trying to do that, then build a business. That means you\u2019ve got to watch out for the family members that come putting holes in the boat when you\u2019re trying to get across the sea. Sometimes you build a boat by yourself, and say y\u2019all all wait over here on the shore. Stay here. I\u2019m building this boat. I\u2019m going to go over and build this and then I\u2019m going to come back and see who\u2019s worthy of because anybody who\u2019s going to drag you down or put holes in the boat or try to destroy you, man, why bring them over?\u201d Tyler said
