Cregger wrote and directed the project, which <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vulture.com\/#cast\">stars Julia Garner and Josh Brolin<\/a>. Although the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vulture.com\/#trailer\">trailer<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vulture.com\/#clips\">preview clips<\/a> have still been holding <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vulture.com\/#plot\">the plot<\/a> pretty close to their chests, we do have a growing arsenal of details about this upcoming film, including <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vulture.com\/#release-date\">when it\u2019s coming out<\/a> and why people are <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/sodasti\/status\/1917213513732235639\">alleging<\/a> that Jordan Peele <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vulture.com\/#hype\">was up in arms<\/a> about not winning the <em>Weapons<\/em> bidding war.<\/p>\n<p data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"www.vulture.com\/_components\/clay-paragraph\/instances\/cma39mf5i003t3b78n4zfyhrv@published\" data-word-count=\"192\">\u201cUm \u2026 hmm,\u201d Garner said when Stephen Colbert <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/IXMHh2xTrZM\">asked<\/a> her the same question on August 4. \u201cIt\u2019s not like anything I\u2019ve ever seen or read before, so it\u2019s really hard to describe.\u201d Although she confirmed that there are \u201ca lot\u201d of jump scares, she stayed pretty cryptic about the plot, which has been standard for the marketing of the film so far. What we do know is that the premise is that all but one child in the same class at an elementary school in the fictional town of Maybrook disappear on the same night at the same time. According to <em>Weapons<\/em>\u2019s logline, the community is \u201cleft questioning who or what is behind their disappearance.\u201d Cregger told <a href=\"https:\/\/ew.com\/weapons-first-look-barbarian-follow-up-julia-garner-josh-brolin-zach-cregger-exclusive-11721483\">Entertainment Weekly<\/a> that there\u2019s more to the story than the missing kids, though. \u201cThat mystery is going to propel you through at least half of the movie, but that is <em>not<\/em> the movie,\u201d he said. \u201cThe movie will fork and change and reinvent and go in new places. It doesn\u2019t abandon that question, believe me, but that\u2019s not the whole movie at all. By the midpoint, we\u2019ve moved on to way crazier shit than that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"www.vulture.com\/_components\/clay-paragraph\/instances\/cma3e5gpv00d43b78cf7n666g@published\" data-word-count=\"56\">World of Reel <a href=\"https:\/\/www.worldofreel.com\/blog\/2025\/3\/11\/razvhdtr7g556b537cdjlzwkgbnpk2#:~:text=We'll%20see%20if%20the,structure%2C%20was%20a%20clear%20influence.\">reported<\/a> that the film features multiple interrelated story lines and is structurally reminiscent of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vulture.com\/article\/paul-thomas-anderson-best-movie-scenes.html\">Paul Thomas Anderson<\/a>\u2019s <em>Magnolia<\/em>. The tie-in promo site, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.maybrookmissing.net\/\">maybrookmissing.net<\/a>, also includes an article about Tess from Cregger\u2019s <em>Barbarian<\/em>, which suggests that <em>Weapons<\/em> is set in the same universe, though it\u2019s not clear if that will factor into the plot.<\/p>\n<p data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"www.vulture.com\/_components\/clay-paragraph\/instances\/cma39qjok00553b78un3tbivn@published\" data-word-count=\"149\">The first official trailer, released on April 29, didn\u2019t give too much away. \u201cSo this one Wednesday is like a normal day for the whole school, but today was different,\u201d a young narrator says off-screen. \u201cEvery other class had all their kids, but Mrs. Gandy\u2019s room was totally empty.\u201d We see footage of the 17 children who got out of bed at 2:17 a.m., ran into the darkness with outstretched arms, and apparently \u201cnever came back.\u201d School principal Andrew (Benedict Wong) eventually advises Gandy (Julia Garner) to stay away from the school; Josh Brolin is playing Archer, a missing kid\u2019s father who is suspicious about why only her class was affected. And he doesn\u2019t seem to be the only parent with concerns. The two-minute trailer also gives us cryptic shots of Gandy entering a dark classroom of children, a car accident happening in broad daylight, and lots of screaming.<\/p>\n<p data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"www.vulture.com\/_components\/clay-paragraph\/instances\/cmdyltnui00273b79bjxlnp9h@published\" data-word-count=\"80\">We see Gandy nervously apologize to a room of distrustful parents in the second trailer, which dropped on June 23. \u201cThe truth is I want an answer just as bad as all of you,\u201d she says. A young narrator confirms that \u201ca lot of people die in a lot of really weird ways in this story, but you\u2019re not gonna find it in the news.\u201d The preview closes with a demonic voice asking, \u201cAre you watching?\u201d over increasingly unsettling shots.<strong> <\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"www.vulture.com\/_components\/clay-paragraph\/instances\/cmdym2dx6002n3b795u661nsb@published\" data-word-count=\"84\">Archer confronts Gandy at her car (which features red \u201cWitch\u201d graffiti) in a July 28 clip. She channels Taylor Swift\u2019s \u201cAnti-Hero\u201d and declares, \u201cI\u2019m the problem, got it.\u201d<strong> <\/strong>But she\u2019s distracted when she sees Andrew sprinting at her with his arms outstretched \u2014 just like we\u2019ve seen the missing children do in the trailer. He tackles her, chokes her, and chases her into a gas station. Judging by the look in his bulging eyes, Andrew is not putting the pal in principal right now.<strong> <\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"www.vulture.com\/_components\/clay-paragraph\/instances\/cmdyl5ngj001k3b79frj3i3pw@published\" data-word-count=\"26\"><em>Weapons<\/em> also shared a look at the film\u2019s opening scene on July 31, featuring a monologue that will be familiar to anyone who\u2019s seen the trailer:<strong> <\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"www.vulture.com\/_components\/clay-paragraph\/instances\/cma39kmqp002u3b7843s2i9j8@published\" data-word-count=\"66\">In addition to Garner, Brolin, and Wong, the cast also includes Alden Ehrenreich, Austin Abrams, Cary Christopher, and Amy Madigan. But Cregger told <a href=\"https:\/\/ew.com\/weapons-first-look-barbarian-follow-up-julia-garner-josh-brolin-zach-cregger-exclusive-11721483\">EW<\/a> on April 28 that there were still \u201ca couple missing names\u201d from the confirmed cast list \u2014 some secret <em>Weapons<\/em>, if you will. As of publication, the cast also includes June Diane Raphael, Whitmer Thomas, Callie Schuttera, Toby Huss, and Luke Speakman.<strong> <\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"www.vulture.com\/_components\/clay-paragraph\/instances\/cma39trmn00693b78q1ub1t3x@published\" data-word-count=\"149\">Well, Hollywood was throwing a lot of money at it. <a href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/2023\/02\/behind-the-scenes-of-zach-cregges-extraordinary-weapons-film-auction-the-dish-1235248310\/#comments\">Deadline<\/a> reported in February 2023 that an auction for <em>Weapons <\/em>led to a bidding war before the film sold to New Line Cinema for around $38 million. Universal was reportedly the other final contender, vying for the project on behalf of Jordan Peele and his Monkeypaw Productions. After the auction, Peele cut ties with two longtime managers at Artists First, one of whom was also Cregger\u2019s manager. (Cregger told <a href=\"https:\/\/ew.com\/weapons-first-look-barbarian-follow-up-julia-garner-josh-brolin-zach-cregger-exclusive-11721483\">EW<\/a><em> <\/em>this year that the bidding war was a \u201cvery high-pressure thing, and people were getting pissed and it was stressful.\u201d) It\u2019s a <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/sodasti\/status\/1917213513732235639\">popular theory online<\/a> that Peele fired his managers because he was upset he didn\u2019t get the winning bid, but we don\u2019t <em>technically<\/em> know that for sure \u2014\u00a0Peele confirmed to Deadline that he was no longer repped by Artists First, but didn\u2019t share a reason for the decision.<\/p>\n<p data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"www.vulture.com\/_components\/clay-paragraph\/instances\/cma3j1bee00gp3b78lkc4fz80@published\" data-word-count=\"114\">Still, that\u2019s not the only evidence that fans are pointing to. In December 2024, Jeff Sneider\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theinsneider.com\/p\/weapons-josh-brolin-movie-eyes-move-to-2025-stephen-a-smith-espn-contract-details-salary\">the InSneider<\/a> reported that the <em>Weapons <\/em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.vulture.com\/#release-date\">release date<\/a> would be moved up to 2025 because positive responses from test audiences made Warner Bros. eager for people to see the film sooner. (Per <a href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/2025\/03\/weapons-paul-thomas-anderson-the-bride-warner-bros-release-date-changes-1236331441\/\">Deadline<\/a>, <em>Weapons <\/em>was originally scheduled to release in January 2026.) Then, in March 2025, Matt Belloni\u2019s <em>Puck<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/puck.news\/newsletter_content\/what-im-hearing-the-mike-pam-rumors-3\/\">reported<\/a> that Sony had offered Cregger a $20 million salary and a portion of box-office profits for his next movie, a remake of <em>Resident Evil<\/em>,<em> <\/em>which some people took as just the latest sign that Cregger did good work on <em>Weapons<\/em>. Plus, the film\u2019s been getting glowing <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/FilmUpdates\/status\/1949951581559963671\">early reviews<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"www.vulture.com\/_components\/clay-paragraph\/instances\/cma39mxuj004i3b78sjqnfybh@published\" data-word-count=\"33\"><em>Weapons<\/em> will be available for mass <s>destruction<\/s> consumption in theaters and Imax on August 8, 2025.
