However, inflation continues to be a worry in the wake of <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptonews.com\/exclusives\/trump-tariffs-return-what-does-it-mean-for-bitcoin-crypto\/\">Donald Trump\u2019s tariffs<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Powell\u2019s language was deliberately cautious. He warned policymakers will be proceeding carefully in the months ahead, and left himself plenty of wriggle room to change course if required.<\/p>\n<figure>\n<p>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Fed Chair Powell's Full Speech at Jackson Hole\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/PZdOFw-gTo8?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<p>But reading between the lines, analysts are now pretty confident that we\u2019ll see the Fed\u2019s base rate tumble by 25 basis points following their meeting next month \u2014 marking the first reduction in the U.S. so far this year.<\/p>\n<p>During his final speech as chairman in Jackson Hole, Powell made it clear that his changing outlook <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptonews.com\/exclusives\/what-trumps-attacks-on-jerome-powell-could-mean-for-crypto\/\">had nothing to do with Donald Trump<\/a>, who has wanted lower interest rates for months and called for the chairman\u2019s resignation.<\/p>\n<p>The president\u2019s response was blunt to say the least, quipping: \u201cWe call him \u2018Too Late\u2019 for a reason.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Reaction to Powell\u2019s address was immediate in the crypto markets. Bitcoin <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptonews.com\/news\/bitcoin-price-prediction-sudden-116k-spike-meets-powells-jackson-hole-caution\/\">immediately vaulted<\/a> from $112,000 to highs of $117,000, but at the time of writing, it\u2019s settled back down towards $115,000. <\/p>\n<p>The real star of the show in Friday\u2019s rally was <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptonews.com\/news\/ethereum-news\/\">Ether<\/a>. After four years of waiting, the world\u2019s second-largest cryptocurrency <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptonews.com\/news\/ethereum-price-live-eth-nears-all-time-high-just-50-away\/\">finally hit all-time highs<\/a> on some exchanges, prompting celebration on X. ETH surged by 15% in a little under three hours.<\/p>\n<p>Although that\u2019s certainly an impressive performance, there\u2019s an important note worth adding here: officially, there <em>hasn\u2019t <\/em>been a new ATH. According to CoinMarketCap, that remains at $4,891.70 \u2014 as seen on November 16, 2021. Its data suggests Friday\u2019s peak was just $7.47 off record territory.<\/p>\n<p>Ether wasn\u2019t alone in notching up double-digit returns, either. Solana, Dogecoin, Cardano, Sui, Avalanche and Polkadot also accelerated by more than 10% in a sign that appetite for riskier assets is growing. <\/p>\n<p>An interest rate cut would be significant \u2014 for many reasons. It makes government borrowing less expensive, and drives down the cost of everything from mortgages to credit cards. But crucially, it also reduces the return on savings in traditional bank accounts, prompting investors to seek healthier returns elsewhere.<\/p>\n<p>Of course, it wasn\u2019t just the crypto world that was basking in the glow of Powell\u2019s speech. The Dow raced to its first record high of 2025, rising by 846 points in a single trading session. And the S&#038;P 500, which had suffered losses for five days in a row before Friday, closed up 1.52% \u2014 its best day in three months. It\u2019s also worth paying close attention to the Nasdaq 100, a tech heavy index, up 1.88%. <\/p>\n<p>Data now suggests there\u2019s an 81% chance of a rate cut from the Federal Open Markets Committee, compared with 75% before Powell\u2019s speech. We\u2019ll find out for sure following their meeting on September 16 and 17.<\/p>\n<p>Beyond the macroeconomic ramifications, the recent price activity exposes a pretty fascinating trend in the crypto markets: <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptonews.com\/academy\/what-is-ethereum\/\">Ether seems to be more popular than Bitcoin right now.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Both are available in ETF form on Wall Street. Data from SoSoValue shows BTC products actually suffered outflows of $23 million on Friday. By contrast, ETH funds witnessed inflows of $337.6 million.<\/p>\n<p>Analysts are arguing that exchange-traded funds have played a huge role in dampening Bitcoin\u2019s volatility, meaning smaller cryptocurrencies are more attractive for traders chasing short-term returns. Etherealize founder Vivek Raman told <em>Bloomberg<\/em>:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cFor many traders, the Bitcoin trade has already played out. Ethereum still feels under-owned, more volatile, and more reactive.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Of course, Bitcoiners would vehemently disagree with this \u2014 and many confidently predict that the world\u2019s first cryptocurrency <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptonews.com\/news\/bitcoin-could-hit-175k-this-year-1m-by-2030-says-sol-strategies-ceo\/\">is firmly on a path to $1 million<\/a> in the next few years \u2014 and <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptonews.com\/news\/bitcoin-price-analysis-why-robert-kiyosaki-sees-btc-as-superior-to-gold-in-crisis\/\">will eventually surpass the market capitalization of gold<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Given how that would involve a 769% jump from current levels, they assert Bitcoin\u2019s still at an early stage, and the trade has plenty of room left to run.
