Billionaire investor Mark Cuban notes this new phase will see firms locking down valuable AI innovations and expertise rather than sharing them.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Major tech companies are in a fierce competition to be at the forefront of AI by recruiting top talent, massively investing in research and development and infrastructure, and scooping up smaller startups left and right.\u00a0<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>This so-called AI war is about to become even more aggressive.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat people are missing about AI, [in my opinion], is no company is going to spend what will end up being more than a trillion dollars and accept not being dominant,\u201d Mark Cuban wrote Sunday on <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/company\/twitter\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/company\/twitter\/\">X<\/a>.\u00a0 \u201cThey will find a way to battle. I don\u2019t know how, other than to guess it will get ugly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Tech giants like <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/company\/facebook\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/company\/facebook\/\">Meta<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/company\/alphabet\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/company\/alphabet\/\">Google<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/company\/microsoft\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/company\/microsoft\/\">Microsoft<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/company\/apple\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/company\/apple\/\">Apple<\/a> have been ferociously recruiting top AI talent\u2014and <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2025\/07\/11\/how-much-ai-salary-meta-zuckerberg-200-million-compensation\/\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/2025\/07\/11\/how-much-ai-salary-meta-zuckerberg-200-million-compensation\/\">dishing out enormous pay packages<\/a> to poach them. Top-tier AI researchers at Meta are <a href=\"http:\/\/v\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" aria-label=\"Go to http:\/\/v\">reportedly being offered<\/a> total compensation packages of up to $300 million over four years, with some first-year earnings over $100 million. One example was a former Apple executive Ruoming Pang, who <em>Bloomberg<\/em> reported is joining Meta\u2019s \u201cSuperintelligence\u201d team for $200 million.<\/p>\n<p>In January, Microsoft announced it was investing about $80 billion this year alone on developing data centers to train AI models and deploy cloud-based applications. An AI researcher at Microsoft makes about $431,000, on average, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.levels.fyi\/companies\/microsoft\/salaries\/software-engineer\/title\/ai-researcher\/locations\/united-states?country=254\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.levels.fyi\/companies\/microsoft\/salaries\/software-engineer\/title\/ai-researcher\/locations\/united-states?country=254\">Levels.fyi<\/a>. Several job-posting sites show the average salary for a software engineer is roughly $125,000, so these so-called AI researchers are making more than three times a software engineer\u2014a job that\u2019s long been regarded as one of the most lucrative in tech.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Google has also invested about $75 billion in AI this year, and recently announced another $25 billion investment to build new AI data centers. <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/company\/nvidia\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/company\/nvidia\/\">Nvidia<\/a> is also a clear frontrunner in hardware powering AI, and some research scientists there <a href=\"https:\/\/www.levels.fyi\/companies\/nvidia\/salaries\/software-engineer\/title\/research-scientist?country=254\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.levels.fyi\/companies\/nvidia\/salaries\/software-engineer\/title\/research-scientist?country=254\">reportedly make more than $600,000<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are seeing them hire away talent and [intellectual property] to build [and] advance their models,\u201d Cuban wrote. \u201cBut that\u2019s just the beginning.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Cuban predicts major tech companies will also start shelling out more to \u201clock up\u201d the IP they think their models need to keep it from their competitors.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe days of publish or perish are probably over,\u201d Cuban wrote. \u201cIt\u2019s now publish, and its value perishes, because it got eaten up by every foundational model.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He suggests the companies that develop valuable IP for AI should encrypt it and silo it.<br \/>\u201cIP is KING in an AI world,\u201d Cuban added. \u201cThe times they are a changing.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><strong>Introducing the 2025 Fortune 500<\/strong>, the definitive ranking of the biggest companies in America.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/ranking\/fortune500\/?&#038;itm_source=fortune&#038;itm_medium=article_tout&#038;itm_campaign=plea_text\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/company\/facebook\/\"00>Explore this year&#8217;s list.<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2025\/07\/22\/mark-cuban-ai-talent-war\/\" class=\"button purchase\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Read More<\/a><br \/>\n Sydney Lake<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Major tech companies are battling for AI dominance, pouring tens of billions into infrastructure and offering sky-high compensation packages.
