{"id":861731,"date":"2025-07-11T19:12:18","date_gmt":"2025-07-12T00:12:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/newsycanuse.com\/index.php\/2025\/07\/11\/contractors-turning-down-tenders-amid-risk-concerns\/"},"modified":"2025-07-11T19:12:18","modified_gmt":"2025-07-12T00:12:18","slug":"contractors-turning-down-tenders-amid-risk-concerns","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/newsycanuse.com\/index.php\/2025\/07\/11\/contractors-turning-down-tenders-amid-risk-concerns\/","title":{"rendered":"Contractors turning down tenders amid risk concerns"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"wrapper_sleeve\">\n<p><img width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.ca.emap.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/2024\/01\/cranes-shutterstock-edinburgh-.jpg\"  decoding=\"async\" fetchpriority=\"high\"  alt=\"cranes-shutterstock-edinburgh-.jpg\"><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Contractors are increasingly rejecting tenders due to concerns over risk, according to Gleeds.<span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The consultancy said that 97 per cent of the contractors surveyed for its latest <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gleeds.com\/en\/insights-and-reports\/market-reports\/uk-construction-market-report-2q-2025\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>UK Construction Market Report<\/em><\/a> had declined tenders in the second quarter of 2025 \u2013 an increase from the 75 per cent in the first three months of the year.<span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u201cConcerns over the proposed conditions or risk profile is the main reason cited by respondents,\u201d the report said, with 68 per cent of those surveyed noting a reduced appetite for risk from contractors in the three months from 1 April.<span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>It comes as around two-thirds of construction professionals surveyed said inflation and interest rates were one of their three biggest concerns, with 17 per cent saying it was their single biggest concern.<span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Gleeds said it expected tender price inflation to be 3.5 per cent in 2025 but warned that \u201cfactors such as size, sector, specification and procurement and tendering strategies can significantly influence tender prices\u201d.<span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>It said the Bank of England\u2019s statement that interest rates should continue to fall will be widely welcomed, adding that the other most-cited areas for concern were global tensions, and insolvencies and supply chain capacity.<span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u201c[Survey] comments suggest that a combination of these factors are adversely affecting project viability across multiple sectors,\u201d the market report said.<span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith material, labour and wider overhead costs impacting already tight margins, a growing aversion to risk, in parallel with shrinking contractor capacity across the market, is further affecting supply chains.\u201d<span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Construction remains the sector with the highest rate of insolvency, with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.constructionnews.co.uk\/financial\/administrations\/construction-sector-suffers-worst-month-for-insolvencies-since-last-july-20-05-2025\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">4,111 business failures<\/a> in the 12 months to March 2025, according to the Insolvency Service.
