A proposal to change Bitcoin\u2019s<\/a> smallest unit from \u201csatoshi\u201d to \u201cbit\u201d is drawing renewed interest, with developers, founders, and thought leaders weighing in.<\/p>\n

The proposal was introduced by Synonym CEO John Carvalho<\/a> last month and is known as BIP 177<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Under current standards, 1 BTC equals 100 million satoshis. However, Carvalho\u2019s plan would reverse that perspective by redefining the smallest unit, 1 satoshi, as \u201c1 bitcoin,\u201d making what is now known as 1 BTC equal to 100 million bitcoins (or bits).<\/p>\n

In this model, a transaction of 0.0001 BTC would be expressed as 10,000 bitcoins. Likewise, owning 10.23486 BTC would translate to 1,023,486,000 bitcoins.<\/p>\n

Carvalho argues that the shift would simplify how users understand the top crypto, reduce cognitive friction, and align the user interface with BTC\u2019s transactional structure. He noted:<\/p>\n

\u201cBitcoin\u2019s ledger represents values as integral base units. The decimal point is merely a human-imposed abstraction.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Bitcoins Mixed reactions trail Bitcoin\u2019s BIP 177<\/h2>\n

The proposal has triggered enthusiasm and concern within the crypto community.<\/p>\n

Twitter<\/a> founder and Bitcoin advocate Jack Dorsey<\/a> backed the change, saying<\/a> that the term \u201csats\u201d creates a psychological barrier for new users.<\/p>\n

According to him:<\/p>\n

\n

\u201c\u2018sats\u2019 is definitely the wrong term and is stopping everyday people from acquiring and spending Bitcoin.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

JAN3<\/a> CEO Samson Mow<\/a> also supports a rebase to bits but recommends waiting until Bitcoin hits dollar-satoshi parity. At that point, he suggests adding two additional decimal places, called \u201csatcents,\u201d to enhance granularity.<\/p>\n

He stated<\/a>:<\/p>\n

\n

\u201cBitcoin will just be synonymous with money, so there won\u2019t be a need for sats.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

However, not everyone agrees with the move as they cite concerns about BTC\u2019s broader security and understanding within the wider community.<\/p>\n

Yu Xian, the founder of blockchain security firm Slowmist, warned that the change could lead to misinterpretation and technical confusion for noobs in the industry.<\/p>\n

Xian furthered<\/a>:<\/p>\n

\u201cIf<\/span> this<\/span> bip177<\/span> passes,<\/span> some<\/span> lousy<\/span> platforms<\/span> might<\/span> mess<\/span> up<\/span> and<\/span> foolishly<\/span> record<\/span> 1<\/span> bitcoin<\/span> as<\/span> 1<\/span> BTC.<\/span> You\u2019ve<\/span> got<\/span> to<\/span> believe,<\/span> the<\/span> more<\/span> basic<\/span> the<\/span> security<\/span> issue,<\/span> the<\/span> more<\/span> likely<\/span> it<\/span> is<\/span> to<\/span> happen\u2026<\/span> Of<\/span> course,<\/span> related<\/span> scams<\/span> might<\/span> pop<\/span> up<\/span> too.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Despite the concerns, Carvalho insists critics haven\u2019t truly engaged with the content of BIP 177.<\/p>\n

He said<\/a>:<\/p>\n

\n

\u201cMost of the people that are scared of BIP 177 haven\u2019t actually read it and are not even attempting to refute the actual motivations within it.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n
