{"id":860716,"date":"2025-07-07T19:12:23","date_gmt":"2025-07-08T00:12:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/newsycanuse.com\/index.php\/2025\/07\/07\/modular-specialists-profit-falls-40-amid-project-overruns\/"},"modified":"2025-07-07T19:12:23","modified_gmt":"2025-07-08T00:12:23","slug":"modular-specialists-profit-falls-40-amid-project-overruns","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/newsycanuse.com\/index.php\/2025\/07\/07\/modular-specialists-profit-falls-40-amid-project-overruns\/","title":{"rendered":"Modular specialist\u2019s profit falls 40% amid project overruns"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"wrapper_sleeve\">\n<p><img width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.ca.emap.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/2021\/02\/Premier-Modular-004.jpg\" alt=\"Premier Modular\"  decoding=\"async\" fetchpriority=\"high\" ><\/p>\n<p>Picture credit: Premier Modular<\/p>\n<div>\n<div>\n<p>Premier Modular saw its pre-tax profit drop by 40 per cent last year amid static turnover and difficulties in its permanent buildings division.<\/p>\n<p>The East Yorkshire-based company, which specialises in manufacturing temporary or permanent modular structures, saw its turnover fall by 0.8 per cent from \u00a3102m to \u00a3101.1m.<\/p>\n<p>Pre-tax profit dropped more sharply from \u00a313.2m to \u00a37.7m, due partly to higher depreciation of tangible assets, the firm said in its accounts for the year to 30 June 2024.<\/p>\n<p>Increased demand for temporary rented modular buildings was offset by lower sales for permanent buildings.<\/p>\n<p>The firm\u2019s directors attributed the fall in permanent modular building sales to market conditions in a sector \u201cthat has seen financial stress for a number of competitors\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>They cited high interest rates, \u201cgenerational levels of inflation and the 2024 general election\u201d as factors.<\/p>\n<p>Directors added: \u201cThe two largest projects undertaken across the year have had issues through delays and cost overruns.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis has led to cash constraints in the business while the issues are worked through. It is believed these issues should be resolved within the calendar year 2025 and resolution will release funds into the business.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Premier Modular\u2019s fleet sales division saw its revenue drop by 7 per cent from \u00a322.2m to \u00a314.6m. Its rental business increased turnover by 9 per cent from \u00a330.5m to \u00a339.2m, but permanent sales dropped by 2 per cent from \u00a349.3m to \u00a347.3m.<\/p>\n<p>Even so, the accounts said Premier Modular\u2019s order pipeline for permanent and rented buildings \u201cis at unprecedented levels\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>And its Dutch subsidiary Premier Modular (Netherlands) \u201ccontinued to grow its pipeline in 2024 and in FY25 the first units have gone on hire\u201d, directors added.<\/p>\n<p>They said they expected the Dutch business to become profitable by June 2026.<\/p>\n<p>Cash at bank and in hand rose from \u00a33m in 2023 to \u00a34.9m the following year.<\/p>\n<p>No dividends were paid out and the firm held no bank loans or overdrafts.<\/p>\n<p>It employed a monthly average of 326 staff \u2013 up from 293 the year before \u2013 and the annual wage bill rose from \u00a315.8m to \u00a318.7m.<\/p>\n<p>Directors warned that the increase in the national living wage and employers\u2019 National Insurance contributions from April this year \u201care expected to be inflationary and deter investment in staff\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>This was in keeping with a broadly pessimistic outlook.<\/p>\n<p>A release of pent-up demand for construction of schools, hospitals and other infrastructure was \u201clong overdue\u201d, directors said.<\/p>\n<p>But with governments \u201cnot delivering on spending promises, and diversions such as the reinforced autoclaved aerated concrete issues delaying new-build programmes, it cannot be certain that the construction industry will see the clarity of future funding needed to kickstart a more optimistic 2025 and 2026\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>However, in the past month alone the firm has been appointed to a framework in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.constructionnews.co.uk\/tech\/offsite-mmc\/firms-win-places-on-500m-modular-framework-16-06-2025\/\">Scotland<\/a>, the four-year <a href=\"https:\/\/www.constructionnews.co.uk\/tech\/offsite-mmc\/firms-win-places-on-500m-modular-framework-16-06-2025\/\">Modular Buildings 3 framework<\/a> from NHS Shared Business Services, and a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.constructionnews.co.uk\/contracts\/specialist-firms-named-to-265m-modular-framework-05-06-2025\/\">\u00a3265m framework from the LHC Procurement Group.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Despite its static turnover, Premier Modular has at least avoided the fate of several other modern methods of construction specialists.<\/p>\n<p>Elements Europe fell into administration last month, for instance, while Northern Ireland-based Jans Offsite Solutions\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.constructionnews.co.uk\/financial\/administrations\/northern-irish-offsite-firm-enters-administration-27-05-2025\/\">went under in<\/a> May.<\/p>\n<p>Derby-based modular builder TopHat plunged more than \u00a350m into the red in the year to 31 October 2023 and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.constructionnews.co.uk\/tech\/offsite-mmc\/modular-firm-tophat-reveals-50m-loss-20-01-2025\/\">ceased trading before the end of 2024, citing \u201cchallenging\u201d market conditions.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>ModPods International\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.constructionnews.co.uk\/financial\/administrations\/modular-specialist-goes-under-after-costly-hq-move-20-08-2024\/\">called in administrators last summer<\/a>\u00a0after spiralling relocation costs hit its bottom line.<\/p>\n<p>Investor L&#038;G\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.constructionnews.co.uk\/financial\/lg-to-stop-making-modular-homes-05-05-2023\/\">wound down its offsite business in 2023<\/a>\u00a0after years of heavy losses and modular specialist Urban Splash House\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.constructionnews.co.uk\/financial\/urban-splashs-modular-spin-off-falls-into-administration-13-05-2022\/\">entered administration in May 2022<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.constructionnews.co.uk\/sections\/cn-intelligence\/companies\/\" target=\"_blank\"> <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.constructionnews.co.uk\/\"><\/a><\/p>\n<div>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.constructionnews.co.uk\/cn-intelligence\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.ca.emap.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/2025\/05\/CN-intelligence-article-promo-200-x-200-px.webp\" alt width=\"250\" height=\"250\"  ><\/a><\/p>\n<p>At CN Intelligence you can view and filter seven years\u2019 worth of detailed financial information on the top UK construction firms via our interactive dashboards.
