But what\u2019s often unseen is what they carry with them long after the sirens fade.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey ask, \u2018Are you OK?\u2019\u201d says retired RCMP officer Jonathan Williams. \u201cAnd I always said, \u2018Of course I\u2019m good.\u2019 Because whatever I just came from\u2026 was worse.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Williams served 14 years in the RCMP. And then it just started eroding me.\u201d<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Story continues below advertisement<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>What followed was a battle with depression and PTSD \u2014 invisible injuries that eventually led him to seek help.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe recovery program was everything,\u201d Williams explains. \u201cIt allowed me to get to a safe place \u2014 not just physically, but mentally.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That program is run by Diversified Rehabilitation Group, a Kelowna-based organization offering specialized support for trauma-exposed first responders. This month, they\u2019re spearheading an online awareness campaign called Sounding the Alarm to shed light on what many suffer in silence.<\/p>\n<section id=\"content-dynamic-trending-stories\" aria-label=\"Dynamic trending stories section\">\n<p><span>Trending Now<\/span>\n\t<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re reaching out through social media during our 31-day campaign,\u201d says Derek Sienko, chief mental health officer with Diversified. \u201cWhen they come to us, they\u2019re emotionally beat up. And they\u2019re not used to sharing \u2014 because they\u2019ve been trained not to.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But silence can be deadly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen trauma goes untreated,\u201d Sienko says, \u201cthe consequences can be devastating. We lose them \u2014 in many different ways. Suicide is one of them.
