Nigeria has been thrown into mourning following the death of legendary Super Eagles goalkeeper, Peter Rufai, who passed away in the early hours of Thursday at the age of 61 after a prolonged illness, Soccernet.ng<\/a> reports.<\/strong><\/p>\n Rufai, fondly known as \u201cDodo Mayana,\u201d was a household name in Nigerian football, remembered for his heroic performances between the sticks for the national team, particularly during the Super Eagles\u2019 golden era in the 1990s.<\/p>\n Born in Lagos, Rufai began his football journey with Stationery Stores and Femo Scorpions before moving to the Benin Republic in 1986 to join AS Dragons FC de l’Ou\u00e9m\u00e9.<\/p>\n His exploits earned him a move to Europe, where he spent six years in Belgium with Lokeren and Beveren, albeit with limited appearances.<\/p>\n In the 1993\u201394 season, he joined Dutch side Go Ahead Eagles, playing 12 matches in the Eredivisie before moving to Portugal\u2019s SC Farense in 1994.<\/p>\n Rufai\u2019s first season at Farense was memorable, as he helped the club qualify for the UEFA Cup for the first time in its history by conceding only 38 goals in 34 matches.<\/p>\n His performances attracted the attention of Spanish side H\u00e9rcules CF, and later Deportivo de La Coru\u00f1a, where he served as a backup to Cameroonian goalkeeper Jacques Songo\u2019o. He famously kept a clean sheet in a 1\u20130 victory over Tenerife in January 1998 while Songo\u2019o was suspended.<\/p>\n Rufai later returned to Portugal for one final season with Gil Vicente before retiring.
