{"id":859940,"date":"2025-07-03T22:15:18","date_gmt":"2025-07-04T03:15:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/newsycanuse.com\/index.php\/2025\/07\/03\/music-parades-and-picnics-how-italy-celebrates-labour-day-on-may-1st\/"},"modified":"2025-07-03T22:15:18","modified_gmt":"2025-07-04T03:15:18","slug":"music-parades-and-picnics-how-italy-celebrates-labour-day-on-may-1st","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/newsycanuse.com\/index.php\/2025\/07\/03\/music-parades-and-picnics-how-italy-celebrates-labour-day-on-may-1st\/","title":{"rendered":"Music, parades and picnics: How Italy celebrates Labour Day on May 1st"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\n                        Labour Day is one of the most important holidays in Italy&#8217;s spring calendar, mixing ancient traditions with modern celebrations.\n                    <\/p>\n<div id=\"articleBody\">\n<p><strong>A public holiday<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Labour Day has been recognised as a public holiday in Italy since shortly after the fall of Fascism in the mid-1940s \u2013 more on that below.<\/p>\n<p>The fact that Labour Day falls on a Thursday this year means many Italians will take the opportunity to <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thelocal.it\/20190418\/italian-expression-of-the-day-fare-il-ponte\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">fare il ponte<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>and give themselves a long weekend break by taking the Friday off as well.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Parades and protests<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>For many in Italy, Labour Day isn&#8217;t just a day off work but also a day of action, with unions and other organisations organising rallies and marches to campaign for workers&#8217; rights and other social issues.<\/p>\n<p>Most Italian towns and cities hold some kind of march or parade, with trade unions CGIL, CISL and UIL <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fanpage.it\/attualita\/sciopero-generale-il-1-maggio-chi-aderisce-in-italia-orari-manifestazioni-e-settori-coinvolti\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">focusing on<\/a> worker safety and job security this year.<\/p>\n<p>USI-CIT has called an all-day strike that may effect the healthcare and education sectors &#8211; though since May 1st is a public holiday anyway in Italy, it&#8217;s unlikely to cause much additional disruption.<\/p>\n<p><strong>READ ALSO: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thelocal.it\/20250424\/key-dates-the-transport-strikes-to-expect-in-italy-in-may-2025\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">KEY DATES: The transport strikes to expect in Italy in May 2025<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>A tradition borrowed from the US<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Though May 1st is Italy&#8217;s Labour Day (as it is for a long list of other countries, including France, Spain and Germany), this day of action actually has its origins in a huge strike in Chicago in 1886.<\/p>\n<p>On May 1st, 35,000 workers walked out of their jobs, joined by tens of thousands more in the next couple days, leading a national movement for an eight-hour work day.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The idea of introducing an international workers&#8217; day made its way to Europe, and Labour Day was first <a href=\"https:\/\/www.raicultura.it\/storia\/foto\/2019\/04\/Primo-maggio-in-Italia-bc10c4e7-f174-4057-b0a2-d40cbb026ac0.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">celebrated<\/a> in Italy in 1891 \u2013 but the holiday was suppressed under Fascism, and only became an official public holiday again in 1946.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Music concerts<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Some Italian cities celebrate May 1st with live open-air music concerts.<\/p>\n<p>The biggest of these is the <em>C<\/em><em>oncertone<\/em> or \u2018big concert\u2019 held every May 1st in Rome\u2019s Piazza San Giovanni in Luterano (though last year it briefly relocated to the Circo Massimo venue).<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.primomaggio.net\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">event<\/a> \u2013 the largest free live music concert in Europe \u2013 features performances from some of Italy&#8217;s most popular singers. This year&#8217;s lineup is set to feature Achille Lauro, Elodie, Ghali and Giorgia, among some 50 performers.<\/p>\n<p>The city of Taranto, in the southern Italian region of Puglia, hosts the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.corriereditaranto.it\/2025\/04\/30\/uno-maggio-taranto-dedicato-a-massimo\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">free concert<\/a> Uno Maggio Taranto, featuring musical acts interspersed with speeches from guests and activists.<\/p>\n<p><strong>READ ALSO: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thelocal.it\/20250428\/labour-day-whats-open-and-whats-closed-in-italy-on-may-1st-2025\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Labour Day: What&#8217;s open and what&#8217;s closed in Italy on May 1st 2025<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Gita fuori porta<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>When the weather is sunny, public holidays in Italy are often observed with a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thelocal.it\/20220811\/italian-expression-of-the-day-gita-fuori-porta\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>gita fuori porta<\/em><\/a>, or &#8216;trip outside the city gates&#8217;, and Labour Day is no exception.<\/p>\n<p>Italians living in towns and cities take advantage of the day off to take a day trip somewhere in nature, be that the seaside, countryside or the mountains.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>It might involve a stroll or even a short hike, but food is always key, whether it&#8217;s lunch at a <em>trattoria\u00a0<\/em>or a barbecue at a picnic spot.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Classic dishes<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>As is always the case on Italian holidays, food comes front and centre, and different parts of the country have their own favourite May Day dishes.<\/p>\n<p>In Rome and the surrounding region of Lazio, green fava beans are eaten raw, straight from the pod, along with pecorino cheese and usually some locally produced <em>vino sfuso\u00a0<\/em>(cask wine) \u2013 a tradition that <a href=\"https:\/\/ricettaqubi.it\/1769-perche-il-1-maggio-a-roma-e-non-solo-si-mangiano-fave-e-pecorino-origini-della-tradizione-e-curiosita\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">dates back<\/a> to ancient Roman times.<\/p>\n<p>In the mountainous central Italian region of Abruzzo, <em>virt\u00f9 teramane<\/em>, a thick stew made using leftover legumes, pasta and fresh vegetables is widely consumed.<\/p>\n<p>And on the island of Sardinia, pilgrims make their way to the shrine of San Francesco di Lula, in the Nuoro province, where they&#8217;re <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gamberorosso.it\/rubriche\/storie\/piatti-tipici-del-1-maggio-le-ricette-italiane-per-la-festa-dei-lavoratori\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">served<\/a> s<em>u\u00a0filindeu<\/em> or &#8216;God&#8217;s threads&#8217; soup \u2013 a kind of minestrone made with very fine strands of pasta in a mutton broth.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Calendimaggio and the &#8216;Songs of May&#8217;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Italy&#8217;s May folk traditions and spring rites celebrating renewal and rebirth, known as <em>Calendimaggio<\/em>, date back to the ancient pagan festival of Floralia, in honour of Flora \u2013 the Roman goddess of flowers and fertility.<\/p>\n<p>In the Middle Ages, young men would go into the woods on the night of April 30th and pick flowering branches to place outside the doors of young girls as a courtship ritual.
