{"id":858545,"date":"2025-06-27T22:13:35","date_gmt":"2025-06-28T03:13:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/newsycanuse.com\/index.php\/2025\/06\/27\/shedeur-sanders-receives-a-first-round-cold-shoulder-from-32-teams-in-green-bay\/"},"modified":"2025-06-27T22:13:35","modified_gmt":"2025-06-28T03:13:35","slug":"shedeur-sanders-receives-a-first-round-cold-shoulder-from-32-teams-in-green-bay","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/newsycanuse.com\/index.php\/2025\/06\/27\/shedeur-sanders-receives-a-first-round-cold-shoulder-from-32-teams-in-green-bay\/","title":{"rendered":"Shedeur Sanders receives a first-round cold shoulder from 32 teams in Green Bay"},"content":{"rendered":"<div data-element=\"story-body\" data-dateline data-subscriber-content>\n<p><span>GREEN BAY, Wis.\u00a0\u2014\u00a0<\/span>In a first round when nine defensive linemen were drafted, NFL teams found a different way Thursday night to disrupt the quarterback.<\/p>\n<p>They ignored him.<\/p>\n<p>Colorado\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nfl.com\/prospects\/shedeur-sanders\/32005341-4e47-8221-56fd-8e3864421298\" target=\"_blank\">Shedeur Sanders<\/a>, once widely predicted to go first overall, instead was bypassed 32 times, even as his college teammate was selected almost immediately.<\/p>\n<p>Two-way Heisman winner <a href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/sports\/story\/2025-03-04\/shohei-ohtani-travis-hunter-two-way-play-difficulty-baseball-football\">Travis Hunter<\/a>, who doubles as a wide receiver and cornerback, went second overall after the Tennessee Titans made Miami quarterback Cam Ward the No. 1 pick.<\/p>\n<p>It appeared as if Hunter was headed for Cleveland, but Jacksonville made a trade with the Browns to move up three spots and grab him.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier in the week, Browns general manager Andrew Berry had likened Hunter to two-way <a href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/sports\/dodgers\">Dodgers<\/a> star <a href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/sports\/dodgers\/story\/2025-04-23\/dodgers-cubs-shohei-ohtani\">Shohei Ohtani<\/a>. Evidently, the Jaguars agree.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere are players that you can target and acquire that alter the trajectory of a football team,\u201d said first-year Jaguars GM <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jaguars.com\/team\/front-office-roster\/james-gladstone\" target=\"_blank\">James Gladstone<\/a> on the team\u2019s YouTube show. \u201cThere are very few, and it\u2019s rare to be able to target and prioritize a player who can alter the sport itself. The New York Giants, who drafted Penn State pass rusher Abdul Carter third overall, traded back into the first round to grab Mississippi quarterback <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nfl.com\/prospects\/jaxson-dart\/32004441-5273-5504-d6f2-f2d3f25131e8\" target=\"_blank\">Jaxson Dart<\/a>, surprising many people who thought the Giants were coming back to secure Sanders.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, the Chargers got a bruising running back <a href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/sports\/chargers\/story\/2025-04-24\/chargers-draft-round-1-omarion-hampton\">in North Carolina\u2019s Omarion Hampton<\/a>, and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/sports\/rams\/story\/2025-04-24\/rams-draft-round-1\">Rams made out like bandits<\/a> in a trade with Atlanta, bailing out of the 26th pick in exchange for the Falcons\u2019 second-rounder \u2014 the Rams didn\u2019t have a selection in that round \u2014 and a first-rounder in 2026.<\/p>\n<p>Two former Servite High players <a href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/sports\/highschool\/story\/2025-04-24\/servite-makes-history-with-two-alumni-picked-first-round-nfl-draft\">went in the first eight selections<\/a>: Michigan defensive tackle <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nfl.com\/prospects\/mason-graham\/32004752-4121-3591-926c-b22e7bea955e\" target=\"_blank\">Mason Graham<\/a> (Cleveland at No. 5) and Arizona receiver <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nfl.com\/prospects\/tetairoa-mcmillan\/32004d43-4d51-4957-830f-234e646a998f\" target=\"_blank\">Tetairoa McMillan<\/a> (Carolina at 8).<\/p>\n<div data-click=\"enhancement\" data-align-center-expanded>\n<figure> <picture><source type=\"image\/webp\"  ><img alt=\"Michigan defensive lineman Mason Graham, who attended Servite High School in Anaheim, hugs NFL commissioner Roger Goodell.\"   width=\"2000\" height=\"1333\" src=\"https:\/\/ca-times.brightspotcdn.com\/dims4\/default\/1e99801\/2147483647\/strip\/true\/crop\/6722x4481+0+0\/resize\/2000x1333!\/quality\/75\/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fcalifornia-times-brightspot.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fa6%2F6e%2Fa19a8f634cd78ed9d2635f220e8d%2Fnfl-draft-football-56228.jpg\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\">   <\/picture>\n<div>\n<p>Michigan defensive lineman Mason Graham, who attended Servite High School in Anaheim, hugs NFL commissioner Roger Goodell after being selected fifth overall by the Cleveland Browns.<\/p>\n<p>(Jeff Roberson \/ Associated Press)<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/figure><\/div>\n<p>There was a lot of focus with the big men up front, with nine defensive linemen \u2014 beginning with No. 3 pick Abdul Carter of Penn State \u2014 and eight offensive linemen selected.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/sports\/story\/2025-04-06\/raiders-coach-pete-carroll-students-usc-professor\">Pete Carroll<\/a>, new <a href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/sports\/story\/2025-01-24\/pete-carroll-agrees-coach-las-vegas-raiders\">coach of the Las Vegas Raiders<\/a>, picked up the most coveted running back in Ashton Jeanty, the No. 6 pick and highest-drafted player in Boise State history.<\/p>\n<p>The coach <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/PeteCarroll\/status\/1915569875864740267\" target=\"_blank\">posted a meme of Marshawn Lynch<\/a>, his old running back in Seattle, on X and wrote, \u201cWe\u2019re fired up!! RAAAAIIIDDDEERRRSS!!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Packers delighted hometown fans by finally using a first-round pick on a receiver for the first time since 2002, selecting Texas wideout Matthew Golden, who covered 40 yards in a scorching 4.29 seconds at the scouting combine. When Golden took the stage, there was a roar of cheers and fireworks exploded over the city.<\/p>\n<p>Golden told reporters that he had an idea when he encountered Packers GM Brian Gutekunst that he might be headed for Green Bay.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMan, I knew once I shook his hand, something just told me they\u2019re going to come get me,\u201d the receiver said.<\/p>\n<p>The Chicago Bears are not popular in Packers country, but clearly bear hugs are, as Goodell was repeatedly enveloped in python-like embraces by just-drafted players.<\/p>\n<p>Among the projected first-round picks who didn\u2019t hear their names called were Michigan cornerback Will Johnson, South Carolina safety Nick Emmanwori, and edge rushers Mike Green of Marshall and Donovan Ezeiruaku of Boston College.<\/p>\n<p>Sanders declined his invitation to attend the event and instead watched from a private draft party in Texas.
