{"id":857425,"date":"2025-06-22T22:12:14","date_gmt":"2025-06-23T03:12:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/newsycanuse.com\/index.php\/2025\/06\/22\/takeaways-from-jack-teixeiras-first-interview-from-prison\/"},"modified":"2025-06-22T22:12:14","modified_gmt":"2025-06-23T03:12:14","slug":"takeaways-from-jack-teixeiras-first-interview-from-prison","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/newsycanuse.com\/index.php\/2025\/06\/22\/takeaways-from-jack-teixeiras-first-interview-from-prison\/","title":{"rendered":"Takeaways from Jack Teixeira\u2019s first interview from prison"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"site-content\" aria-label=\"Main Site Content\">\n<section>\n<article role=\"main\">\n<header>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<span id=\"article-header-primary-term\"><br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/www.boston.com\/tag\/crime\/\"><br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tCrime\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/a><br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>The former Massachusetts Air National Guardsman told ABC News he doesn\u2019t feel he betrayed his country in leaking highly classified military documents.<\/h2>\n<figure>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"768\" height=\"432\" src=\"https:\/\/bdc2020.o0bc.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/Leaked_Documents_Investigation_54497-669874dacd5c6-768x432.jpg\" alt=\"FILE - This artist depiction shows Massachusetts Air National Guardsman Jack Teixeira, right, appearing in U.S. District Court in Boston, April 14, 2023.\" decoding=\"async\"  ><figcaption>\n\tThis artist depiction shows Massachusetts Air National Guardsman Jack Teixeira, right, appearing in U.S. District Court in Boston, April 14, 2023.<em> Margaret Small via AP, File<\/em>\t<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/header>\n<p>A former Massachusetts Air National Guardsman who leaked highly classified military documents said he\u2019d do it all again if given the chance \u2014 even as he serves a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.boston.com\/news\/crime\/2024\/11\/12\/mass-national-guardsman-jack-teixeira-sentenced-to-15-years-for-leaking-classified-information\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">15-year prison sentence<\/a> for one of the most consequential national security breaches in years.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Jack Teixeira, 23, told <a href=\"https:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/US\/pentagon-leaker-jack-teixeira-speaks-prison-1st-time\/story?id=122050062\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">ABC News<\/a> in his first interview from prison that he doesn\u2019t feel he betrayed his country in exposing assessments of Russia\u2019s war in Ukraine and other closely guarded national secrets.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJust the opposite,\u201d the Dighton native told ABC News. \u201cI believe that I educated a lot of the people who have been kept in the dark and who were being lied to about this, concerning all of the things that had been going on.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Here are four takeaways from Teixeira\u2019s interview:<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-ex-guardsman-says-his-goal-was-education-not-treason\">Ex-guardsman says his goal was education, not treason<\/h2>\n<p>Teixeira was adamant in describing himself as a \u201cpatriot\u201d and said he did not set out to harm the U.S., but to educate its people \u201cabout what was going on.\u201d Teixeira also told ABC News he felt he had accomplished his mission \u201cto a significant degree.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Federal prosecutors accused Teixeira of using his top-secret clearance to leak classified documents on Discord, a social media platform popular with gamers, in 2022 and 2023. The former IT specialist <a href=\"https:\/\/www.boston.com\/news\/local-news\/2024\/02\/29\/mass-air-national-guardsman-and-pentagon-leak-suspect-jack-teixeira-expected-to-plead-guilty-in-federal-case\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">pleaded guilty<\/a> last year to six counts of willful retention and transmission of national defense information. He also pleaded guilty in March to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.boston.com\/news\/crime\/2025\/03\/13\/mass-national-guardsman-jack-teixeira-pleads-guilty-to-obstructing-justice-calls-himself-a-proud-patriot\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">military charges<\/a> of obstructing justice, calling himself a \u201cproud patriot.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Speaking to ABC News, he said <a href=\"https:\/\/www.boston.com\/news\/crime\/2024\/11\/12\/mass-national-guardsman-jack-teixeira-sentenced-to-15-years-for-leaking-classified-information\/#:~:text=%E2%80%9CI%20wanted%20to,addressed%20the%20judge\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the apology<\/a> he offered during his federal sentencing last November was not an expression of remorse for the leak, but for the fallout he caused family and friends.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI still believe in my actions,\u201d Teixeira added in the interview.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-teixeira-s-mother-also-speaks-out\">Teixeira\u2019s mother also speaks out<\/h2>\n<p>His mother, Dawn Dufault, told ABC News her son\u2019s 2023 arrest \u201cwas a complete surprise to me.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe first inkling I had that anything was awry,\u201d she told the news outlet, was when reporters arrived at her home that morning hoping to speak with Teixeira. \u201cI still didn\u2019t believe it; it was unbelievable to me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dufault told ABC News her son has obsessive-compulsive disorder and was recently diagnosed as being on the autism spectrum, which she believes may have factored into his actions.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think that that also played into his compulsion to go against his oath that he took to the government,\u201d she said in the interview. \u201cI feel like part of it was possibly uncontrollable because of what we now know is autism.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dufault described her son as a \u201cgood kid,\u201d telling ABC News, \u201cI think he needs a second chance. I think he\u2019s still destined for something great. I always have, and I still feel that way.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1720\" height=\"1163\" src=\"https:\/\/bdc2020.o0bc.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/YVJJGYFAOFL7Y47REPJOTX365Q-6577772961d7a.jpg\" alt  ><figcaption>Jack Teixeira, as pictured as a senior in the 2020 Dighton-Rehoboth Regional High School yearbook.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2 id=\"h-teixeira-is-appealing-to-trump-for-a-pardon\">Teixeira is appealing to Trump for a pardon<\/h2>\n<p>Teixeira railed against the U.S. Department of Justice during his court-martial in March, alleging federal prosecutors were \u201cpoliticized against President Trump and myself,\u201d the Associated Press reported. He called on Trump\u2019s administration to reverse his convictions.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Speaking to ABC News, Teixeira referred to himself as a \u201csacrificial lamb\u201d who had been \u201ccrucified to be made of as an example.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI just feel like there are people who have done far worse things as far as what they did with similar information, and they didn\u2019t get as bad of a treatment as I did,\u201d he told the news outlet. \u201cBut my case was specifically politicized by the Biden administration.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-teixeira-claims-he-was-encouraged-to-do-due-diligence-despite-warnings\">Teixeira claims he was encouraged to do \u2018due diligence,\u2019 despite warnings<\/h2>\n<p>While Teixeira had been <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bostonglobe.com\/2023\/05\/19\/metro\/jack-teixeira-guardsman-accused-of-leaking-top-secret-information-due-in-court\/#:~:text=despite%20receiving%20repeated%20warnings%20not%20to%20divulge%20classified%20material\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">repeatedly warned<\/a> not to divulge classified information, he alleged in his ABC News interview he was encouraged to do the \u201cexact opposite to those directives\u201d and do \u201cdue diligence and look at what we\u2019re supporting,\u201d and why.<\/p>\n<p>Teixeira also accused former President Joe Biden\u2019s administration of propagating \u201clies\u201d about the \u201ctactical and strategic aspect\u201d of the war in Ukraine.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve tortured myself over and over and over again about what would happen if I didn\u2019t do this, or what would happen if this and that.
