He joined The Verge in 2019 after nearly two years at Techmeme.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"zephr-anchor\">\n<p>YouTube is bringing its Veo 3 AI video generation model, which my colleague Allison Johnson recently called \u201ca slop monger\u2019s dream,\u201d to YouTube Shorts later this summer, according to a Cannes Lions keynote <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.youtube\/news-and-events\/neal-mohan-cannes-2025\/\">from YouTube CEO Neal Mohan<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Shorts creators can already take advantage of the previous-generation Veo 2 model <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theverge.com\/news\/612031\/youtube-ai-generated-video-shorts-veo-2-dream-screen\">to generate<\/a> backgrounds with Dream Screen as well as standalone clips. Mohan didn\u2019t specify exactly what Veo 3 will enable in Shorts, but he did mention Veo 3\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theverge.com\/news\/670181\/google-deepmind-ai-videos-app-flow-veo-3-2-imagen-4-io-2025\">improved video quality<\/a> and that it can incorporate audio, so presumably those upgrades will be coming to Shorts.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s also unclear if Shorts creators will have to pay to use Veo 3. Right now, generating Veo 3 videos requires a paid subscription to Google\u2019s AI Pro or AI Ultra plans.
