Mechanical and engineering (M&E) contractor NG Bailey has seen its pre-tax profit soar by 65 per cent and recorded its highest-ever turnover.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Leeds-based family firm reported a \u00a317.7m pre-tax profit in its latest accounts for the 12 months to 28 February this year.<\/span><\/p>\n

The previous year saw it<\/span> turn a \u00a325m loss into a \u00a310.7m profit<\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Revenue in the latest period rose by 10 per cent from \u00a3600m to \u00a3662m \u2013 the highest in NG Bailey\u2019s 104-year history. Engineering work accounted for \u00a3346m and infrastructure services the rest.<\/span><\/p>\n

The firm, which is 33rd in the<\/span> CN100 ranking<\/span><\/a> and second in the<\/span> CN Specialists M&E index<\/span><\/a>, recorded a bumper order book worth \u00a31.6bn \u2013 rising from \u00a31.4bn the previous year.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe order book has a healthy mix of project work and predictable, recurring-income contracts,\u201d it said.<\/span><\/p>\n

The financial results follow Jonathan Stockton\u2019s first year in post as NG Bailey\u2019s chief executive and the launch of the group\u2019s Journey to 2030 strategy, which will see it undertake a programme of targeted investment.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIt has been a year of stability and progress at NG Bailey, with record sales alongside improved profitability and cash generation,\u201d Stockton said.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThis positive financial performance is rooted in our relentless focus on managing project risk and prioritising bottom-line returns over top-line revenue growth.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cOur criteria for selecting the projects we take on is stringent across the group, which we see as critical in a resource-constrained market.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The firm said it is prioritising markets that are more resilient during economic downturns, such as defence, healthcare, rail and nuclear.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cOur Journey to 2030 strategy builds on the heritage and strengths of NG Bailey, with a commitment to invest for the long term, allowing us to capitalise on the significant opportunities in our marketplace, including selective low-risk strategic acquisitions that can complement organic growth by adding capability, geography and resilience,\u201d Stockton added.<\/span><\/p>\n

NG Bailey\u2019s employee number rose from 3,411 to 3,468, while its wage bill increased from \u00a3177.4m to \u00a3187m.<\/span><\/p>\n

The accounts showed its cash and deposits went up by 71 per cent from \u00a327.3m to \u00a346.9m, and the firm is free of bank debt.<\/span><\/p>\n

Its contracts have included \u00a31.8bn worth of work at Hinkley Point C, a \u00a3190m contract to refurbish government buildings in Manchester and a \u00a3280m office build in London.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n
