He has been an investor in Harmonix, Zynga, Fitbit, and Coinbase (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nasdaq.com\/market-activity\/stocks\/coin\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">NASDAQ: COIN<\/a>), among others.<\/p>\n<p>Feld says he has been on a \u201clong arc,\u201d starting his first company in college, then having his first big success at 28 before reinvesting in 40+ companies as an angel. He says he loves four things: spending time with Amy, writing, reading, and running.<\/p>\n<p>In response to host <a href=\"https:\/\/coingeek.com\/author\/kurt-wuckert-jr\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Kurt Wuckert Jr.\u2019s<\/a> question about whether some success is down to timing, Feld says timing and luck are one and the same. Every successful entity has had a near-death experience, he says.<\/p>\n<p>Feld advises founders and investors to spend time getting to know themselves lest they spend time doing things that don\u2019t feed them. Knowing yourself allows you to lock in on what you care about, but most people don\u2019t do that work.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The lack of value in the blockchain industry<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Wuckert gives Feld his main criticism of the <a href=\"https:\/\/coingeek.com\/blockchain101\/private-vs-public-vs-permissioned-blockchain-a-comparative-guide\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">blockchain<\/a> space: basically, no <a href=\"https:\/\/coingeek.com\/what-is-blockchain-strategic-value\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">value<\/a> bridges itself into the real world. Every dollar that could be used to build a real company is being used to <a href=\"https:\/\/coingeek.com\/why-is-trading-and-speculating-so-popular\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">speculate on tokens<\/a>. He asks Feld when and how we can create real value.<\/p>\n<p>Feld remembers how, in the Dot Com bubble, lots of capital funded conceptually good ideas that weren\u2019t very useful. Capital was rewarded for doing so, and very soon, it funded 10 such ideas. A handful of those ideas survived the Dot Com crash.<\/p>\n<p>In \u2018crypto,\u2019 many people are <a href=\"https:\/\/coingeek.com\/nft-craze-dot-com-bubble-2-0\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">trading magic beans<\/a>, which has consumed lots of mind space, he says. There are borderline religious believers around various <a href=\"https:\/\/coingeek.com\/the-original-bitcoin-protocol-what-is-it-and-why-does-it-matter\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">protocols like BTC<\/a>. In time, there will be a reckoning for all of this.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The value proposition of on-chain data and companies in the industry<\/strong><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Wuckert says that <a href=\"https:\/\/coingeek.com\/to-trust-the-future-you-must-first-trust-the-data\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">data<\/a> is the only commodity he is aware of that becomes more valuable as it becomes more abundant. Ensuring it is properly <a href=\"https:\/\/coingeek.com\/refining-data-to-information-with-bsv-blockchain-how-bitcoin-adds-context\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">understood, valid, and tradable<\/a> is a huge opportunity. Blockchain introduces transparency and makes everyone\u2019s data footprint monetizable.<\/p>\n<p>Feld responds with a rhetorical question: why do you think they\u2019re not giving you that transparency now? They\u2019re motivating you with a minimal amount of money to get you to keep up your efforts. Transparency brings in market power and value gets traded more fairly.\n<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>As for the value of companies in the blockchain industry, such as <a href=\"https:\/\/coingeek.com\/we-need-to-talk-about-coinbase\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Coinbase<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/coingeek.com\/is-microstrategy-now-an-unacceptable-risk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Strategy<\/a> (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nasdaq.com\/market-activity\/stocks\/mstr\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">NASDAQ: MSTR<\/a>), Feld puts them in two broad categories: one, Coinbase, is a centralized storage mechanism for decentralized things, and the others, like Strategy, are trading at multiples of their value by purchasing a fixed asset.<\/p>\n<p>Of the latter kind, he asks what will happen when everyone wants to extract value from them.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Advice for Web3 founders trying to raise their first round<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Feld gives sage advice to <a href=\"https:\/\/coingeek.com\/what-is-web-3-0-a-deep-dive\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Web3<\/a> founders looking to raise their first round: don\u2019t pitch. Instead, find something you are truly passionate about and make that come across. There\u2019s a category of investors who will get excited about this and will respond. These investors are looking for a signal, and while passion is easy to fake, obsession isn\u2019t.<\/p>\n<p>As for the people who laugh and dismiss people like Wuckert, who believes he will be one of the best-known <a href=\"https:\/\/coingeek.com\/who-wants-to-be-an-entrepreneur-video\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">entrepreneurs<\/a> of his generation, Feld says, \u201cthey don\u2019t matter.\u201d The majority of the companies he invests in don\u2019t make it, and that\u2019s OK.
