stock.adobe.co<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div id=\"content-header\">\n<h2>After pulling the plug on plans by the previous government to build a supercomputer in Edinburgh, the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology commits \u00a3750m to a very similar initiative<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"content-center\">\n<ul>\n<li><i data-icon=\"1\"><\/i><\/li>\n<li><i data-icon=\"2\"><\/i><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div id=\"contributors-block\">\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.ttgtmedia.com\/rms\/computerweekly\/Caroline-Donnelly-CW-contributor-2022-140x180px.JPG\" alt=\"Caroline Donnelly\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p><span>By<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n\t\t\t\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/www.techtarget.com\/contributor\/Caroline-Donnelly\">Caroline Donnelly,<\/a><br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<span>Senior Editor, UK<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\n\tPublished: <span>11 Jun 2025 12:15<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<section id=\"content-body\">\n<p>Chancellor Rachel Reeves has committed up to \u00a3750m in funding to create the UK\u2019s most powerful supercomputer at the University of Edinburgh, ten months <a href=\"https:\/\/www.computerweekly.com\/news\/366600078\/Labour-drops-Edinburgh-exascale-supercomputer-but-funds-more-AI\">after the government pulled the plug on a similar project backed by the previous administration<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Funding for the project is set to be confirmed by Reeves during the Spending Review later today, where she is expected to make a series of funding commitments to secure economic growth across the nation.<\/p>\n<p>Taking action to ensure the use of artificial intelligence (AI) becomes more pervasive across the UK is a key part of the government\u2019s plans to shake up the economy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are investing in Scotland\u2019s renewal so working people are better off,\u201d said Reeves. \u201cStrong investment in our science and technology sector is part of our plan for change to kickstart economic growth, and as the home of the UK\u2019s largest supercomputer, Scotland will be an integral part of that journey.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>According to the government, the proposed supercomputer will provide scientists across the UK with the compute power they need to \u201cunlock a decade of national renewal through AI\u201d and the carrying out of research that could transform how various industries operate.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe supercomputer will work alongside the AI research resource, a network of the UK\u2019s most powerful supercomputers that were built to bolster scientific research,\u201d said the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology (DSIT) in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>It will also form part of the soon-to-be-created network of other high-performance computing facilities, known as the AI Research Resource, which DSIT said the government has committed to expand by at least 20 times by 2030.<\/p>\n<p>No firm details have been shared so far about the capacity of the supercomputer, but DSIT said further information about the system will be revealed later this summer, with the publication of its <em>Compute roadmap<\/em> document.<\/p>\n<p>In the meantime, Peter Mathieson, principal and vice-chancellor of the University of Edinburgh, said the supercomputer investment will have a transformative impact on the UK, and locally in Edinburgh, too.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis significant investment will have a profoundly positive impact on the UK\u2019s global standing, and we welcome the vast opportunities it will create for research and innovation,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBuilding on the University of Edinburgh\u2019s expertise and experience over decades, this powerful supercomputer will drive economic growth by supporting advancements in medicine, bolstering emerging industries and public services, and unlocking the full potential of AI,\u201d added Mathieson. \u201cWe look forward to working alongside the UK government and other partners to deliver this critical national resource.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>News of the announcement may come as a surprise to some, given that 10 months ago, the government confirmed it was pulling the plug on an \u00a3800m exascale supercomputer project in Edinburgh previously announced by the Conservative government.<\/p>\n<p>At the time, DSIT said the money for that project had been promised by the previous administration, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.computerweekly.com\/news\/366600078\/Labour-drops-Edinburgh-exascale-supercomputer-but-funds-more-AI\">but was never formally allocated for in its budget<\/a>.
