To celebrate their 20th wedding anniversary, King Charles III<\/strong> and Queen Camilla<\/strong> made a quick detour for a photo shoot during the first day of their royal tour of Italy. Following the stop on Monday, the pair released a new official portrait<\/a>, taken by longtime royal photographer Chris Jackson<\/strong> outside of Villa Wolkonsky in Rome.<\/p>\n

The couple\u2014who were married in a civil ceremony in April 2005\u2014also shared a message about the four-day visit, which will take them to Rome and Ravenna. \u201cAs we begin our first visit to Italy as King and Queen, we are so looking forward to celebrating our twentieth wedding anniversary in such a special place\u2014and with such wonderful people,\u201d it read. \u201cA presto, Roma e Ravenna!\u201d<\/p>\n

When the king and the queen first announced this tour, intended to emphasize the strong bonds between the UK and Italy, their itinerary also included<\/a> a stop by the Vatican to honor the year\u2019s Papal Jubilee with Pope Francis,<\/strong> but it was cancelled<\/a> due to the pontiff\u2019s long illness. Though the pope recently returned home following a five-week stay at Rome\u2019s Gemelli Hospital where he was treated for pneumonia, his recovery is still ongoing.<\/p>\n

On Tuesday, the visit continued with a flypast emphasizing the nation\u2019s military alliance. According to the BBC<\/a>, the king and queen watched as the UK\u2019s Red Arrow pilots flew alongside Italy\u2019s Frecce Tricolori, both aerobatic teams trailing the colors of their respective flags. Later, the couple traveled to pose in front of the Colosseum and the Temple of Venus.<\/p>\n

In remarks to the press, the UK\u2019s ambassador to Italy Lord Llewellyn<\/strong> said that the king and queen\u2019s \u201clove for Italy\u201d and \u201call things Italian\u201d has resonated with the Italian public. \u201cThis state visit comes at a key moment,\u201d he added, \u201cas we reset our relations with our European partners.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
