Here\u2019s all the news you need to know as you start the day.\n<\/p>\n

1. Indian-Pakistan attacks<\/h3>\n

At least 26 people have been killed after India fired missiles into Pakistani-controlled territory<\/a> in several locations, in what Pakistan\u2019s leader called an \u201cact of war\u201d.<\/p>\n

Pakistani officials said the strikes hit at least two sites previously tied to banned militant groups, while India claimed to have destroyed \u201cnine terrorist camps\u201d in strikes.<\/p>\n

2. Conclave<\/h3>\n

This morning at 10am Rome time (9am in Ireland), the Cardinals will gather inside St Peter\u2019s Basilica for the Holy Mass for the election of the new pope.<\/a><\/p>\n

And then, at 4.30pm Rome time, the 133 cardinal electors will assemble in Pauline Chapel in the Apostolic Palace before entering the Sistine Chapel for the conclave.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s the largest conclave in history, and could have been larger still but for two absences due to illness.<\/p>\n

3. Central Bank Report<\/h3>\n

Motor insurance premiums increased by 9% in the first six months of last year<\/a>, according to new research by the Central Bank.<\/p>\n

The average cost of insuring vehicles like cars, motorbikes and vans was \u20ac616 between January and June 2024. It is one of the largest costs recorded by the banking regulator in recent months and\u00a0puts an end to a trend of price cuts.<\/p>\n

4. Fossil fuels<\/h3>\n

Record fossil fuel production kept planet-heating methane emissions near historic highs last year<\/a>, the International Energy Agency has said, warning of a surge in massive leaks from oil and gas facilities.<\/p>\n

Slashing emissions of methane \u2014 second only to carbon dioxide for its contribution to global warming \u2014 is essential to meeting international targets on climate change and one of the fastest ways to curb temperature rise.<\/p>\n

5. Gulf of Persia<\/h3>\n

US President Donald Trump plans to announce on his trip to Saudi Arabia next week that the US will start to refer to the Persian Gulf as the Arabian Gulf<\/a> or the Gulf of Arabia.<\/p>\n

Last night, Indian missiles struck a number of sites in Pakistan and Pakistani-controlled Kashmir\u00a0in a major escalation following weeks of rising tensions and cross-border gunfire exchanges between the two nuclear-armed nations.<\/p>\n

7. Housing tsar<\/h3>\n

The Taoiseach and Housing Minister James Browne have both said that no one in government was aware that Brendan McDonagh advertised a property he jointly owns on a short-term letting website for more than \u20ac10,000 a week.<\/a><\/p>\n

McDonagh, who is currently the CEO of Nama, was mooted to become the government\u2019s new housing tsar. However, he withdrew his name from consideration last week following controversy over his proposed appointment and \u20ac430,000 salary.\u00a0<\/p>\n

8. International relations<\/h3>\n

Canada is not for sale, prime minister\u00a0Mark Carney\u00a0told US President Donald Trump during their meeting in the Oval Office yesterday evening.<\/a><\/p>\n

The first meeting between the two North American leaders was held in Washington DC today in the context of Carney\u2019s\u00a0decisive election win last week, in which he ran on a platform of fighting against the threat posed to Canada by Trump\u2019s policies.<\/p>\n

9. Drug seizure<\/h3>\n

Garda\u00ed in Limerick have arrested three people after drugs worth more than \u20ac500,000 were seized along with 200 rounds of ammunition.<\/a><\/p>\n

The seizure was conducted by members of the Garda Limerick Divisional Drug Unit after Garda\u00ed stopped a vehicle in the Galvone area in the south of the city.<\/p>\n
