The sale by Tarmac of troubled civils contractor Alun Griffiths Contractors to its eponymous former owner has been confirmed.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Welsh civils firm was acquired by Alun Griffiths \u2013 who founded the business in 1968 \u2013 this week, operating through a company he controls, Grosmont Ventures, which was set up earlier this year.<\/span><\/p>\n

The sale price has not been disclosed.<\/p>\n

\u201cTarmac will continue to work closely with Alun Griffiths Contractors Ltd, to ensure there is a smooth transition on a business-as-usual basis,\u201d a Griffiths spokesperson said.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe intention is to refocus the company as a privately owned entity with an emphasis on its established strengths of safety, customer service, engineering excellence and a local geographic presence.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Two former senior Alun Griffiths employees appear to be returning to the firm along with the former owner.<\/p>\n

Alun Griffiths’ return to his eponymous firm was confirmed on Companies House with a directorship listing dated 8 May.<\/p>\n

On LinkedIn, the firm’s former rail director Tim James has updated his profile with the title of managing director at Alun Griffiths Contractors. He is listed on Companies House as a director of Grosvenor Ventures.<\/p>\n

James left last year, spending a year as director at Cambrensis Civil Engineering, another firm set up by Alun Griffiths two years ago.<\/p>\n

Cambrensis director Simon Dunn, Alun Griffiths’ former pre-construction director is listed as the third director of Alun Griffiths Contractors.<\/p>\n

Alun Griffiths Contractors had been<\/span> consulting staff on plans to restructure<\/span><\/a> earlier this year after reporting its fifth consecutive pre-tax loss.<\/span><\/p>\n

It last turned a profit in 2018, the year it was acquired by Tarmac for \u00a336m<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n

A week after the announced restructure, it<\/span> withdrew from a \u00a31.8m flood defence scheme<\/span><\/a> at Severn Stoke, Worcestershire, leaving the future of the project in the balance.<\/span><\/p>\n

Last March, it<\/span> unexpectedly walked away<\/span><\/a> from the \u00a389m Banwell Bypass job in Somerset after enabling works were already underway.<\/span><\/p>\n

The contract<\/span> was eventually taken up by Galliford Try<\/span><\/a> in September.<\/span><\/p>\n

According to its most recent financial statements for the year ending 31 December 2023, the firm\u2019s headline performance had been impacted by \u201csignificant losses\u201d on certain large fixed-price contracts entered into before the economic disruption arising from the pandemic and the conflict in Ukraine.<\/span><\/p>\n

It recorded turnover of \u00a3262.7m \u2013 a 13 per cent drop on the \u00a3301m it made the previous year.<\/span><\/p>\n

Alun Griffiths was ranked 61st in the <\/span>CN100 2024<\/span><\/a> index of top UK contractors by turnover, slipping two places year on year.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n
