{"id":847583,"date":"2025-05-11T21:12:29","date_gmt":"2025-05-12T02:12:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/newsycanuse.com\/index.php\/2025\/05\/11\/how-to-plan-ahead-for-retiring-to-italy\/"},"modified":"2025-05-11T21:12:29","modified_gmt":"2025-05-12T02:12:29","slug":"how-to-plan-ahead-for-retiring-to-italy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/newsycanuse.com\/index.php\/2025\/05\/11\/how-to-plan-ahead-for-retiring-to-italy\/","title":{"rendered":"How to plan ahead for retiring to Italy"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\n                        If your dream is to retire to Italy, there are things you can do now to prepare for the move and make sure all goes smoothly in your new life.\n                    <\/p>\n<div id=\"articleBody\">\n<p>We&#8217;re not questioning your commitment to your job &#8211; but are you already dreaming of the moment when you retire and can move to Italy?<\/p>\n<p>If so, you&#8217;re not alone; every year, thousands of people retire to Italy hoping to enjoy a new, more relaxed lifestyle in the land of olive groves and <em>espressi<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>But you might be wondering what you could do to plan ahead if you&#8217;re still a few months or years away from retirement.<\/p>\n<p>Here are some suggestions.<\/p>\n<p><b>Will your visa allow you to work?<\/b>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Not everyone wants to go directly from full-time work to total retirement, so you might be planning a change in professional direction such as\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thelocal.it\/20240118\/how-we-left-the-uk-to-open-a-bb-in-a-tuscan-village\">opening a B&#038;B<\/a> or running tours or workshops.<\/p>\n<p>First, however, you need to know whether you will be legally able to work in Italy.<\/p>\n<p>If you have citizenship of an EU country, then this will be no problem, but if you are a non-EU citizen, whether you have the right to work will depend on the type of visa\/residency card you get.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thelocal.it\/20230125\/explained-how-to-apply-for-an-elective-residency-visa-to-move-to-italy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">elective residency visa<\/a> \u2013 the most popular choice for retirees \u2013 does not allow you to work in Italy.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/apiwp.thelocal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/AFP__20230822__33T63H2__v1__Preview__ItalyWeatherHeatDrought.jpg\" alt=\"A couple walks hand in a hand on a beach of Lake Maggiore\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\"><\/p>\n<p>If you&#8217;re preparing to plunge and retire in Italy, you&#8217;ll need to look into your visa options. (Photo by MARCO BERTORELLO \/ AFP)<\/p>\n<p>Italy does have an investor or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thelocal.it\/20250228\/is-italys-golden-visa-still-available-in-2025\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">&#8216;golden&#8217; visa<\/a>, but you&#8217;ll need to commit to investing anywhere between \u20ac250,000 and \u20ac2 million in an Italian start up, company, philanthropic initiative, or government bonds.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thelocal.it\/20240410\/qa-your-questions-answered-about-italys-digital-nomad-visa\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">digital nomad visa<\/a>, introduced last year, does allow applicants to work, but you&#8217;ll need to jump through a number of hoops, including demonstrating an annual income of at least \u20ac28,000.<\/p>\n<p><strong>READ ALSO: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thelocal.it\/20241011\/bureaucratic-hell-how-one-american-got-italys-digital-nomad-visa\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">&#8216;Bureaucratic hell&#8217;: How one American got Italy&#8217;s digital nomad visa<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>You can find more information on visas and residency <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thelocal.it\/20231108\/visas-and-residency-what-youll-need-for-retirement-in-italy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><b>Find a place to live<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Once you&#8217;ve figured out what paperwork you&#8217;ll need to move to Italy and sorted out your financial situation, the next step is finding somewhere to live \u2013 and you&#8217;ll want to make sure you do your homework.<\/p>\n<p>Some second-home owners use their Italian homes as a holiday home while they are working, and then move to Italy to live there full time once they retire.<\/p>\n<p>If, however, you don&#8217;t have a place in Italy, then you can use the years leading up to retirement to narrow down where you want to live &#8211; and we say years, not months, because it&#8217;s strongly recommended to visit a place in both the winter and the summer before you commit.<\/p>\n<p><strong>READ ALSO: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thelocal.it\/20231123\/research-and-more-research-how-do-you-choose-the-right-part-of-italy-to-move-to\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">&#8216;Research and more research&#8217;: How do you choose the right part of Italy to move to?<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This is especially important in rural areas and holiday destinations, which can be very different in the off-season.<\/p>\n<p>If you&#8217;re considering a move to a rural area think about whether you will need a car and, if so, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thelocal.it\/20250217\/which-countries-have-driving-licence-exchange-agreements-with-italy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">whether you&#8217;ll need to take an Italian driving test<\/a> and what would happen if you are no longer able to drive.<\/p>\n<p><b>Research your healthcare options<\/b><\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re planning on moving to Italy as a non-EU national, it\u2019s important to consider your healthcare options well in advance, not least because adequate health coverage is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thelocal.it\/20240119\/italian-healthcare-should-you-switch-from-public-to-private\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">one of the conditions<\/a> for getting your <i>permesso di soggiorno<\/i>, or residency permit.<\/p>\n<p>While a short-term private healthcare plan is often the only solution available to new foreign residents as they wait for their permits, permit holders have two options: either register with the country&#8217;s national health system (<em>Servizio Sanitario Nazionale<\/em>, SSN) or take out private health insurance.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/apiwp.thelocal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/AFP__20200909__1X333H__v1__Preview__ItalyHealthVirusCinemaVeniceFilmFestivalMostraAt.jpg\" alt=\"People enjoy a drink at a cafe terrace in Venice at the 77th Venice Film Festival in 2020.\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\"><\/p>\n<p>Even if you&#8217;re in excellent shape, as a non-EU national you&#8217;ll still need to ensure you have full health coverage before retiring to Italy (Photo by Tiziana FABI \/ AFP).<\/p>\n<p>If you fall into the category of foreign residents that are eligible for &#8216;mandatory registration\u2019 (<i>iscrizione obbligatoria<\/i>), you can <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thelocal.it\/20241030\/ssn-who-can-register-for-national-healthcare-in-italy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">register with the SSN<\/a> for free. A number of Italian language schools now also provide online classes if you aren&#8217;t able to attend an immersive in-person programme.<\/p>\n<p><b>Check your tax situation <\/b><\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s also worth checking out the tax situation in Italy and having a conversation with a tax expert who is qualified in both Italy and your home country to ensure that all your plans are fully tax compliant.<\/p>\n<p>You\u2019ll be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.agenziaentrate.gov.it\/portale\/web\/english\/residence-for-tax-purposes\">considered a tax resident<\/a> in Italy if, for at least 183 days a year, you are physically present in the country, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thelocal.it\/20230120\/how-to-register-with-the-anagrafe-in-italy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">registered as a local resident with Italy\u2019s <em>Anagrafe<\/em> registry office<\/a>, or have your place of \u201cresidence or habitual residence\u201d in Italy.<\/p>\n<p>As an Italian tax resident you\u2019ll be required to declare your global income, i.e. income generated not just in Italy but anywhere in the world (foreign pensions, foreign rental income, etc.).<\/p>\n<p>Cross-border tax treaties are complicated and vary consider between countries, so it&#8217;s a good idea to seek specialist advice for your particular situation.<\/p>\n<p>Italy has dual taxation agreements with several countries, including the UK and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thelocal.it\/20230418\/reader-question-do-us-nationals-in-italy-have-to-pay-taxes-twice\">US<\/a>, meaning that if you have already paid tax on your income in another country, you likely won&#8217;t be taxed on it again \u2013 though you\u2019ll still have to tell the Italian taxman about it.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p> Zonia Kucera <br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thelocal.it\/20250311\/how-to-plan-ahead-for-retiring-to-italy\" class=\"button purchase\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Read More<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>If your dream is to retire to Italy, there are things you can do now to prepare for the move and make sure all goes smoothly in your new life.
