The cruise carries wealthy adventurers, bucket listers and, increasingly, polar scientists looking to gather data as public funding for Antarctic research vanishes under the Trump administration.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The National Science Foundation is one of the largest funders of scientific research in the world, with an annual budget of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/d41586-025-01263-0\" target=\"_blank\">roughly $9 billion<\/a> that supports the bulk of U.S. Antarctic research. Over the last few months, the Trump administration has ordered deep cuts to the agency, leaving scientists to wonder how they\u2019ll study everything from melting glaciers and ice sheets to the impact of pollution from power plants and wildfires.<\/p>\n<p>On Thursday, Sethuraman Panchanathan, the director of the National Science Foundation, resigned after the White House directed him to slash the agency\u2019s budget and staff by more than half, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.science.org\/content\/article\/nsf-director-resign-amid-grant-terminations-job-cuts-and-controversy\" target=\"_blank\">according to exclusive reporting from Science<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Panchanathan\u2019s resignation follows an earlier order from Elon Musk\u2019s Department of Government Efficiency to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/d41586-025-01263-0\" target=\"_blank\">freeze funds<\/a> for all new research grants at the National Science Foundation, and last week\u2019s announcement that DOGE will be terminating<a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/DOGE\/status\/1913403692906324405\" target=\"_blank\"> over $200 million<\/a> in \u201cwasteful\u201d research grants awarded by the agency.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Some experts are concerned that the Trump administration\u2019s ongoing cuts to the National Science Foundation <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/d41586-025-01055-6\" target=\"_blank\">may signal the end<\/a> for American research in Antarctica.<\/p>\n<figure><picture data-testid=\"picture\"><source media=\"(min-width: 1000px)\" ><source media=\"(min-width: 320px)\" ><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/media-cldnry.s-nbcnews.com\/image\/upload\/t_fit-760w,f_auto,q_auto:best\/rockcms\/2025-04\/250425-Antarctic-ch-1215-1d3e3b.jpg\" alt=\"A seal.\" height=\"1667\" width=\"2500\"><\/picture><figcaption data-testid=\"caption\"><span data-testid=\"caption__container\">A leopard seal along the Antarctic Peninsula.<\/span><span data-testid=\"caption__source\">Chase Cain \/ NBC News<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>James Barnes, the co-founder of the Antarctic and Southern Ocean Coalition, an international alliance for environmental nongovernmental organizations focusing on Antarctic conservation and research, says that the National Science Foundation has become an \u201cevil word\u201d among many in the Trump administration.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s tragic to me having the National Science Foundation\u2019s budget cut,\u201d he said in an interview with NBC News. \u201cFor what reason? It\u2019s not good for us on lots of levels, because there\u2019s lots to be learned in Antarctica.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>President Donald Trump\u2019s directives specifically targeting Antarctic research include high-profile firings of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/02\/25\/climate\/trump-nsf-cuts-antarctica.html\" target=\"_blank\">several National Science Foundation staffers<\/a> working on Antarctic projects and cuts to essential <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/Presidential-Designation-of-Funding-as-an-Emergency-Requirement-Multiple-Accounts-in-the-Full-Year-Continuing-Appropriations-and-Extensions-Act.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">construction funding for McMurdo Station<\/a>, the biggest U.S. research base on the continent.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Research operations based in Antarctica had already been dwindling for several years \u2014 decades of robust field work were disrupted and <a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC10906921\/\" target=\"_blank\">never recovered from Covid-19 restrictions<\/a>. Now, research on the world\u2019s southernmost continent is facing several years under Trump\u2019s slash-and-burn policies.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>But aboard the MS Fridtjof Nansen<em> <\/em>and its sister ship, the MS Roald Amundsen, polar scientists have reliable funding for their research. HX Expeditions, which operates the two Antarctic ships, hosts researchers from institutions like Western Washington University; the University of California, Santa Cruz; and the National Snow and Ice Data Center. Their room and board is covered by ticket purchases from tourists sailing to Antarctica for their once-in-a-lifetime trips.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe would not be able to support the research that we are supporting if we did not have paying customers that would allow our ships to go down south,\u201d Verena Meraldi, chief scientist of HX Expeditions, said.\u00a0\u201cIt\u2019s not easy [to get there]. The number of visitors to Antarctica has increased from around 8,000 every year in the 1990s to more than 120,000 annually, according to the latest data from the <a href=\"https:\/\/iaato.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">International Association of Antarctica Tour Operators<\/a>. By 2035, the ecotourism market is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.globenewswire.com\/news-release\/2025\/02\/04\/3020259\/0\/en\/Ecotourism-Market-Set-for-Significant-Growth-Projected-to-Reach-USD-551-8-Billion-by-2035-Future-Market-Insights-Inc.html\" target=\"_blank\">projected<\/a> to grow to over $550 billion.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>On its late March expedition to the Antarctic Peninsula, the MS Fridtjof Nansen<em> <\/em>was home to more than 400 ecotourists and several researchers, including Freya Alldred, a doctoral student from Durham University in England who says that without this cruise, it\u2019s unlikely she would have been able to get to Antarctica.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Alldred traveled with sterilized bags to collect samples of seaweed growing in Antarctic waters and snow algae, which blooms on the continent\u2019s vast expanse of snow. She is studying how climate change affects the carbon content of these Antarctic species, and the cruise offered a unique opportunity to collect new samples.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve not been to anywhere with a research base,\u201d Alldred said. \u201cIf instead, I\u2019d gone to the British Antarctic base, I could only sample within my area. Whereas here, we\u2019ve been to five different sites across the peninsula that have potentially not been studied before.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The boat housed scientists and ecotourists in close quarters, giving scientists the rare opportunity to explain their work directly to nonscientists through interactive sessions in the onboard lab.
