(1:56)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<div>\n<div>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/a.espncdn.com\/combiner\/i?img=\/i\/columnists\/full\/charania_shams.png&#038;h=80&#038;w=80&#038;scale=crop\" alt width=\"40\" height=\"40\"><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/nba\/player\/bio\/_\/id\/614\/shaquille-oneal\">Shaquille O&#8217;Neal<\/a> has agreed to become the <a data-clubhouse-guid=\"b7f30bc3-0620-fde0-ea07-d3834ed3268c\" href=\"http:\/\/www.espn.com\/mens-college-basketball\/team\/_\/id\/16\/sacramento-state-hornets\">Sacramento State<\/a> men&#8217;s basketball general manager, sources told ESPN.<\/p>\n<p>It will be an unpaid, voluntary role for the Basketball Hall of Famer, whose son <a data-player-guid=\"eda5119a-5321-3b49-8490-e17ff981525d\" href=\"http:\/\/www.espn.com\/mens-college-basketball\/player\/_\/id\/4684156\/shaqir-oneal\">Shaqir O&#8217;Neal<\/a> will play for Sacramento State under new coach <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/nba\/player\/bio\/_\/id\/61\/mike-bibby\">Mike Bibby<\/a> after transferring out of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.espn.com\/mens-college-basketball\/team\/_\/id\/50\/florida-am-rattlers\">Florida A&#038;M<\/a> in late March to join the Hornets.<\/p>\n<p>Shaquille O&#8217;Neal is the latest high-profile athlete to accept a general manager role with a school. NBA superstar <a data-player-guid=\"5dda51f1-50c9-66e1-2026-400b73f34fad\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/nba\/player\/_\/id\/3975\/stephen-curry\">Stephen Curry<\/a> was named an assistant GM at his alma mater, Davidson, last month, and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.espn.com\/nba\/team\/_\/name\/atl\/atlanta-hawks\">Hawks<\/a> star <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/nba\/player\/_\/id\/4277905\/trae-young\">Trae Young<\/a> has that same role at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.espn.com\/mens-college-basketball\/team\/_\/id\/201\/oklahoma-sooners\">Oklahoma<\/a>. Retired NFL quarterback Andrew Luck last year accepted the GM position with his old school, Stanford.<\/p>\n<p>O&#8217;Neal won four NBA titles, three NBA Finals MVPs and a league MVP during his 19-year career in the NBA. He is currently an analyst on TNT&#8217;s &#8220;Inside the NBA&#8221; show. He also served as a minority owner of the <a data-clubhouse-guid=\"e266c4ea-9af3-1bd8-06fb-fd608fd30e26\" href=\"http:\/\/www.espn.com\/nba\/team\/_\/name\/sac\/sacramento-kings\">Sacramento Kings<\/a> from 2013 to 2022.<\/p>\n<p>Sacramento State is slated to open a new basketball facility on campus this fall. University president Luke Wood, an alum and the youngest president ever appointed in the California State University system, has been aggressive in his approach with the athletic programs &#8212; and the addition of Shaquille O&#8217;Neal continues that.<\/p>\n<p>The Hornets hired Bibby, a 14-year NBA veteran and former Kings star, last month. He replaced Michael Czepil, who served as interim head coach for the 2024-25 season after David Patrick left to take a job as associate head coach at <a data-clubhouse-guid=\"0082bd85-3d3b-7d16-f176-b72443a93398\" href=\"http:\/\/www.espn.com\/mens-college-basketball\/team\/_\/id\/99\/lsu-tigers\">LSU<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Sacramento State went 7-25 this past season under Czepil and had gone 28-42 in two campaigns with Patrick at the helm.
