ISLAMABAD:<\/strong> The Islamabad Inspector General of Police (IGP) on Thursday told the Islamabad High Court (IHC) that he would need fourteen days to recover the two missing brothers of journalist Ahmad Noorani.<\/p>\n

The US-based Noorani works for a news outlet called FactFocus.<\/p>\n

Noorani\u2019s mother Amina Bashir had filed a plea with the Islamabad High Court (IHC) seeking the recovery of her sons \u2013 Muhammad Saifur Rehman Haider and Muhammad Ali \u2013 saying they went missing from their residence on March 19.<\/p>\n

On Tuesday, Reporters Without Borders (RSF) demanded the immediate release of Noorani\u2019s brothers, calling it a \u201cclear reprisal to intimidate and silence [Noorani].\u201d<\/p>\n

During proceedings on Thursday, Justice Inam Ameen Minhas heard the plea, while Advocate Imaan Mazari-Hazir, representing the petitioner, appeared before the court along with Noorani\u2019s mother and sister.<\/p>\n

At the outset of the hearing, Justice Minhas asked IGP Ali Nasir Rizvi how much time he would need to recover the two brothers, to which the IGP replied that he\u2019d need two weeks.<\/p>\n

\u201cTake one year,\u201d Noorani\u2019s mother cried out as she appeared on the rostrum.<\/p>\n

Justice Minhas said to the IGP: \u201cI had asked the station house officer to inquire and tell us.\u201d<\/p>\n

The IGP responded that he was supervising the matter and had formed a special investigation team under the supervision of the senior superintendent of police operations.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe have done geofencing and also obtained CDR (Call Detail Records). No one in 27 police stations or CTD has information [on the brothers\u2019 whereabouts],\u201d he told the court.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe have contacted all IGPs and prisons across the country, but such information is not available anywhere,\u201d he said. \u201cWe have been in contact with the IGPs of all provinces and sought information.\u201d<\/p>\n

IGP Rizvi said that the Intelligence Bureau (IB) has been informed and a reply is awaited from the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA).<\/p>\n

\u201cNo one with these names has gone abroad,\u201d the IGP told the court.<\/p>\n

He added that they have checked with the chief commissioner, local districts and hospitals, but no information has turned up.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe also checked with [Rescue] 15, nothing was found,\u201d IGP Rizvi said. \u201c15 has an auto-record system, we have not received any calls at this time.\u201d<\/p>\n

The court asked what the solution was since people had already gone missing.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe need more time, we are doing our best,\u201d the IGP said.<\/p>\n

To this, Mazari said: \u201cThey\u2019re saying they have checked hospitals, checked everything; has anyone checked them?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWe have made allegations regarding the intelligence agencies under the Ministry of Interior,\u201d Mazari said.<\/p>\n

Justice Minhas said: \u201cThey have been given notices, when they respond, we can see.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe police have taken those who had cameras,\u201d Mazari said, to which Justice Minhas said, \u201cTell the police about this so that they can look into the matter.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cHow did they leave Islamabad? Where are they? This is what needs to be seen,\u201d Justice Minhas said.<\/p>\n

Advocate Mazari asked: \u201cHave safehouses been checked?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYesterday, another journalist was picked up and then the FIA presented him [before a court],\u201d Mazari said, referring to journalist Waheed Murad who was produced before an Islamabad court by the FIA after his family alleged that he was \u201cabducted.\u201d<\/p>\n

He was subsequently remanded in a two-day physical custody under the country\u2019s cybercrime laws for posting \u201cintimidating content\u201d online.<\/p>\n

Justice Minhas noted that it was now necessary for the Ministry of Defence to respond. He instructed the secretary of the Ministry of Defence to submit a response at the next hearing.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf you know Allah as the witness, tell me what you would have done if these were your children, or his children?\u201d Noorani\u2019s mother said.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat day I asked you, if something happened to my sons, who would be responsible?\u201d she questioned.<\/p>\n

At this, Mazari said: \u201cThe court should order the recovery and presentation of both the missing brothers.\u201d<\/p>\n

Noorani\u2019s mother repeated that she was extremely worried.<\/p>\n

The court sought a response and adjourned the hearing till after Eidul Fitr.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
