It is a \u201cgrassroots movement dedicated to economic resistance, government accountability, and corporate reform.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The group, which has no political affiliation, aims to unite Americans against corporate greed. John Schwarz founded it to raise awareness about how the \u201csystem is rigged\u201d against everyday Americans. The protest comes as many Americans struggle with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.boston.com\/real-estate\/real-estate\/2024\/07\/16\/massachusetts-ranked-2nd-highest-cost-living\/\">the high cost of living<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Johnson hopes to make a difference at Gather Here by halting credit card payments.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Johnson noted that 96% of the sales process through the store involves credit card companies. When a customer uses a credit card at the store, credit card companies charge retailers a small percentage of the total purchase price as an interchange fee or swipe fee. In addition, the store uses credit cards to pay their suppliers.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo we\u2019re going to stop the flow of fees for a day,\u201d Johnson wrote.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWill it make a difference?\u201d asked Johnson. \u201cWell, I believe that if enough people choose to avoid spending money on Friday the 28th, it will make a dent and show folks that WE ARE ABLE TO ORGANIZE.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gather Here Cambridge isn\u2019t the only local business supporting the cause. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/profile.php?id=100089435352651\">Lola\u2019s Coffee and More<\/a> in Medford will offer a 20% discount to cash-paying customers on Friday.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI feel like people are struggling in so many ways,\u201d said owner Pearl Brault on Thursday. \u201cI see it in my customers and the buying powers of people coming in here. If my community is hurting, I feel like I have to be a part of that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Brault says that, despite the potential impact on her business, it\u2019s important to share the message that \u201cour families are struggling.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur government and people handling our economy \u2014 they have not heard the voices of people who live paycheck to paycheck,\u201d Brault said. <\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-what-is-the-economic-blackout\"><strong>What is the economic blackout?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>The blackout asks consumers to avoid all unnecessary in-person or online purchases from midnight Thursday to midnight Friday.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo Amazon, No Walmart, No Best Buy,\u201d The People\u2019s Union USA website says. \u201cNowhere!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The website also urges consumers to avoid spending money at major retailers and using credit or debit cards to make unnecessary purchases.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The only exception is essentials such as medicine, food and emergency supplies, which the organization recommends purchasing at small, local businesses.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The People\u2019s Union USA already plans other targeted economic actions, including weeklong blackouts against specific retailers like Amazon, Nestle, and Walmart.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/reel\/DGN92JHp_CL\/\">Instagram video<\/a> posted last week, Schwarz said the blackout is meant to show that large corporations don\u2019t run the economy but that everyday consumers do.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor our entire lives, they have told us we have no choice,\u201d said Schwarz. \u201cThat this is just how things are. That we have to accept these insane prices, corporate greed, billionaire tax breaks all while we struggle to just to get by,\u201d he said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Schwarz added, \u201cFor one day, we are going to finally turn the tables.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-will-it-work\"><strong>Will it work?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>The movement is targeting consumer spending, the bedrock of the U.S. economy, which accounts for nearly 70% of the U.S. GDP, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/fred.stlouisfed.org\/series\/DPCERE1Q156NBEA\">Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>But, some critics say stopping spending for one day won\u2019t make an impact.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA lot of people dismiss the idea, arguing that a one-day spending freeze won\u2019t move the needle for major corporations or the broader financial system,\u201d Kevin Thompson, the CEO of 9i Capital Group, an investment advisor in Texas, told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsweek.com\/will-nationwide-economic-blackout-work-2030187\">Newsweek<\/a>. \u201cAnd I agree \u2013 it\u2019ll likely have a minimal direct impact.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut what many overlook is the power of the idea,\u201d Thompson continued. \u201cThe playbook for this already exists\u2014Montgomery, 1955, the Bus Boycott. If this gains traction, it could turn into something much bigger, especially if people extend it beyond just one day.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<hr id=\"h-tell-us\">\n<p>Sorry.
