(The Hill) The latest cold open of \u201cSaturday Night Live\u201d recreated President Donald Trump\u2019s speech at the Rose Garden, where he announced sweeping global tariffs, and drew criticism from a one-time host of the show.<\/p>\n

In the introductory voice-over, the narrator declared that the tariffs, \u201clike everything else so far in his presidency, it was a total home run.\u201d<\/p>\n

Trump, played by James Austin Johnson, went on to announce the tariffs, which he said was his favorite word because it was \u201cshort for tariff-ic idea,\u201d and it was like a \u201cseries of random numbers, like the numbers on the computer screen in \u2018Severance.’\u201d<\/p>\n

He also said the tariffs were an effort to \u201cMake America Great Depression Again,\u201d or \u201cMAGDA.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou know what? It\u2019ll be gr it\u2019ll be better than great,\u201d Johnson\u2019s Trump said. \u201cIt\u2019ll be a fantastic, unbelievable Depression, the likes of which you\u2019ve never seen before.\u201d<\/p>\n

The skit also referenced Trump\u2019s effort to levy taxes on several uninhabited or sparsely populated islands with little to no exports.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cNo country is safe from my tariffs,\u201d Johnson said. \u201cI even put tariffs on an island that is uninhabited by humans.\u201d<\/p>\n

Johnson\u2019s Trump also criticized trade with other countries, including South Africa. <\/p>\n

\u201cThey\u2019ve never even sent us one good thing,\u201d he said before Mike Myers\u2019s Elon Musk, wearing a cheese hat, a reference to Musk\u2019s recent visit to Wisconsin, joined the stage. The tech billionaire flew to Wisconsin the Sunday before the state Supreme Court election to hand out $1 million checks to multiple voters who signed his petition against \u201cactivist judges.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat about me?\u201d Myers\u2019s Musk asked. <\/p>\n

\u201cThat was from when I tried to buy the election in Wisconsin,\u201d he added. \u201cI\u2019m an idiot. I should have just bought Wisconsin.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cSuddenly, no one likes Tesla cars,\u201d he continued. \u201cSo I asked myself why and then I answered myself: because of me.\u201d He went on to play a video that introduced a new Tesla that he described as \u201cthe first electric car in history to be fully self-vandalizing.\u201d<\/p>\n

Reports of vandalism at Tesla dealerships\u00a0have spiked more broadly since Musk took the spotlight alongside Trump, especially when the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) began its purge of federal workers and funding for foreign aid programs.<\/p>\n

In response to the skit, Musk wrote on his social media platform X that SNL \u201chasn\u2019t been funny in a long time.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThey are their own parody,\u201d the one-time \u201cSNL\u201d host wrote.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n
