The accidental burning of that plant could, however, present a silver lining for ERCA.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u201cWe\u2019re going to be moving ahead to see if we can turn a problem into a plus,\u201d said Byrne.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{\"134233117\":false,\"134233118\":false,\"201341983\":0,\"335551550\":1,\"335551620\":1,\"335559685\":0,\"335559737\":0,\"335559738\":0,\"335559739\":160,\"335559740\":279}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Twenty firefighters from three Lakeshore fire stations responded to the fire. It releases toxins from its roots into the soil to hinder the growth of and kill other surrounding plants. When they catch fire, phragmites also give off a lot of smoke.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u201cW<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">hat is suspected is some young people were out and had a little campfire out there, and then it got out of control,\u201d said Byrne. \u201cThat\u2019s an unlawful activity, and it\u2019s not sanctioned in there<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Firefighters allowed the fire to burn itself out using the phragmites as fuel, which presents an opportunity for ERCA, said Byrne.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u201cWe\u2019re reaching out quickly to see if we can actually encourage some more senior levels of funding, to see if there\u2019s an opportunity to do some level of water control at that site to attempt to eradicate the return of phragmites.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u201cWe now have that that landscape over there that had the phragmites eradicated, and now we\u2019re taking a close look at can we take advantage of a poor situation and improve upon it?\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">The area with the dead phragmites is highly reactive to changes in lake water levels, said Byrne. <\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/section>\n<section>\n<p>Article
