As a young man he had the upper lobe of his right lung removed, and he now relies on a wheelchair, walker or cane because of chronic knee pain and sciatica.<\/p>\n<h2><span>What to Know<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Vatican spokesperson Matteo Bruni provided the update Wednesday morning, confirming that Francis &#8220;had a tranquil night, woke up and had breakfast.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The pope was admitted to the hospital on Friday, and on Monday, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsweek.com\/complex-infection-keeps-pope-hospital-2032146\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">doctors identified a polymicrobial respiratory tract infection<\/a> that then developed into pneumonia.<\/p>\n<p>A CT scan conducted Tuesday confirmed &#8220;the onset of bilateral pneumonia,&#8221; Bruni said, which led to adjustments in the pope&#8217;s treatment plan.<\/p>\n<p>Despite the pneumonia diagnosis, the pope remains in &#8220;good spirits,&#8221; according to Bruni.<\/p>\n<p>Pneumonia is a serious lung infection that can range in severity and is especially dangerous in older adults.
