Gayle King<\/strong><\/a> is hitting back at critics of the recent all-women Blue Origin spaceflight.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve certainly read some of the things online coming from people that I know, that I like, that I consider friends,\u201d the CBS Mornings<\/em> host, 70, told Entertainment Tonight<\/em> in an interview published on Tuesday, April 15, just 24 hours after she and five other women entered space<\/a> for around 11 minutes.<\/p>\n

King, Katy Perry<\/strong>, filmmaker Kerianne Flynn<\/strong>, civil rights activist Amanda Nguyen<\/strong>, former NASA rocket scientist Aisha Bowe<\/strong> and Blue Origin founder Jeff Bezos<\/strong>\u2018 fianc\u00e9e, Lauren S\u00e1nchez<\/strong>, made history Monday, April 14, as they became the first all-women crew aboard a spaceflight<\/a> since Russian cosmonaut Valentina Tereshkova<\/strong>\u2019s 1963 solo trip.<\/p>\n

However, the trip has received criticism from the likes of Olivia Wilde<\/strong><\/a> and Emily Ratajkowski<\/strong>, who spoke out against the expensive journey amid a cost-of-living crisis in the U.S. and its impact on the environment.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is what I would say to that: space is not an either\/or, it\u2019s a both\/and. Because you do something in space doesn\u2019t mean you\u2019re taking anything away from Earth, and what you\u2019re doing in space is trying to make things better here on Earth,\u201d King told Entertainment Tonight<\/em>. \u201cWhat Blue Origin wants to do is take the waste here and figure out a way to put it in space to make our planet cleaner. Jeff Bezos has so many ideas, and the people that are working there are really devoted and dedicated to making our planet a better place.\u201d<\/p>\n
King went on to add, \u201cHave you been? If you\u2019ve been and you still feel that way after you come back, please let\u2019s have a conversation.\u201d<\/p>\n

King also called out people who called the trip a \u201cride,\u201d noting that, \u201cWhenever a man goes up, you have never said to an astronaut, \u2018Boy, what a ride!\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWe duplicated the same trajectory Alan Shepard<\/strong> did back in the day pretty much,\u201d King explained. \u201cNo one called that a ride. It was called a flight, it was called a journey, because a ride implies that it\u2019s something frivolous or something that\u2019s light-hearted.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cThere was nothing frivolous about what we did, and the machine that we were on, and what it took for the people to get that machine up and running, to get us up and get us back down safely,\u201d she continued.<\/p>\n
