Give them a safe and normal environment to grow and develop in and let them decide who they are when they become adults.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The same ad ran across other papers, including\u00a0<em>The Australian a<\/em>nd <em>The Age<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe ads were designed to do nothing more than stoke division and provoke outrage \u201cfrom a fringe political actor desperately looking for attention\u201d, Equality Australia CEO Anna Brown <a href=\"https:\/\/www.smh.com.au\/business\/companies\/backlash-over-clive-palmer-s-trumpet-of-patriots-gender-advertisements-20250311-p5limm.html\">told<\/a> the <em>Sydney Morning Herald<\/em> on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey do nothing to inform debate or promote any understanding of what are complex issues that affect the most vulnerable people in our community.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The publisher of the Newcastle Herald, Australian Community Media, has also removed the ad from digital publication and issued an apology to readers, saying that the ad did not align with its company values.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cACM and the Herald apologise unreservedly to our readers, the transgender community and to the Newcastle community more broadly for any hurt and distress caused by the publication of the advertisement,\u201d the statement read.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe support freedom of speech and a diversity of views, but on this occasion we let our readers and our staff down.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>Nine entertainment defends decision to run ad<\/h3>\n<p>Nine entertainment, which publishes <em>The Age<\/em>, stood by their decision, writing a letter to staff on Wednesday, arguing that rejecting a political advertisement could lead to allegations that the newspaper endorsed what it published.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is abundantly clear in any political ad that it is authorised by a representative of a political party registered with the AEC and is not reflective of any editorial position,\u201d the letter said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf we were to start picking and choosing which platforms of a registered political party were acceptable, that could imply endorsement of any political ads we did choose to run, and would insert our organisation into the political debate as a participant rather than observer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Editorial staff opposed the ad, running a story above it calling Palmer a \u201cpersistent wart on the foot of Australian politics\u201d, but readers say the gesture rang hollow when the paper was willing to accept his money in the first place.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">Appalling that the Age is giving oxygen to this transphobic advertising from Clive Palmer.<\/p>\n<p>What a disgraceful message to send your trans employees. <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/auspol?src=hash&#038;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#auspol<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/uh1BCdMT2b\">pic.twitter.com\/uh1BCdMT2b<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Rob Baillieu (@rebaillieu) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/rebaillieu\/status\/1899564814395142592?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">March 11, 2025<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The Trumpet of Patriots also ran banners across the front pages of the <em>Australian<\/em>, <em>Daily Telegraph,\u00a0<\/em>and several papers from Western Australia\u00a0on Monday, one reading: \u201cWe don\u2019t need to be welcomed to our own country,\u201d while the other said: \u201cToo much immigration destroys infrastructure.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s the start of what will surely become a common, exhausting sight, as Palmer begins his advertising blitz for the upcoming federal election.<\/p>\n<p>The billionaire has already pledged to spend more than the $100 million spent by his previous political party in the 2022 federal election, seemingly taking a very Trump-ian approach to advertising.<\/p>\n<p>The Republican Party <a href=\"https:\/\/www.starobserver.com.au\/news\/republicans-have-spent-over-us65-million-on-anti-trans-election-ads\/233624\">reportedly<\/a> spent more than $65 million on televised ads attacking trans people during Trump\u2019s election campaign.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.starobserver.com.au\/news\/newspapers-run-front-page-transphobic-clive-palmer-ad\/235822\" class=\"button purchase\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Read More<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Newcastle Herald has apologised for running a transphobic ad from the Clive Palmer Trumpet of Patriots party on the front page, after significant backlash from editorial staff and human rights groups.
