Pope Francis suffered two breathing attacks on Monday, requiring two separate bronchoscopies, as he continues to battle pneumonia, the Vatican has confirmed<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The 88-year-old pontiff has been struggling with respiratory issues in recent weeks, raising concerns about his health.<\/p>\n

\u201cToday, the Holy Father experienced two episodes of acute respiratory failure, caused by a significant accumulation of endobronchial mucus and consequent bronchospasm,\u201d it said in a statement on Francis\u2019s 18th day in hospital, the longest of his papacy.<\/p>\n

The Argentine pope was admitted to Rome\u2019s Gemelli hospital on February 14 with bronchitis, which developed into pneumonia in both lungs, sparking alarm across the globe.<\/p>\n

The Vatican said Monday in its nightly medical bulletin that two bronchoscopies were performed on the pope in order to \u201caspirate abundant secretions\u201d.<\/p>\n

It said the pope had resumed \u201cnon-invasive mechanical ventilation\u201d in the afternoon \u2014 the use of an oxygen mask \u2014 noting that he was \u201calert, focused and cooperative.\u201d<\/p>\n

As it has since the start of the pope\u2019s hospitalisation, the Vatican said Francis\u2019s prognosis remains \u201creserved,\u201d an indication that doctors cannot predict the likely outcome of his condition.<\/p>\n

On Sunday evening, the Vatican had said the pope\u2019s condition was stable, after he suffered a breathing crisis on Friday.<\/p>\n

The leader of the world\u2019s almost 1.4 billion Catholics had required the oxygen mask on Friday and Saturday, but not on Sunday, when he participated in mass and spent the rest of the day alternating rest with prayer.<\/p>\n

Francis had also on Sunday received Italian Cardinal Pietro Parolin, the Vatican\u2019s secretary of state, and Edgar Pena Parra, a Venezuelan archbishop who is also a senior Vatican official.<\/p>\n

The Jesuit, who has been pope since March 2013, is being treated in a special suite reserved for pontiffs on the 10th floor of the Gemelli.<\/p>\n

Francis, born Jorge Bergoglio, missed his traditional Angelus prayer for a third straight Sunday and the Vatican issued a written text instead.<\/p>\n

In it, the pope thanked well-wishers for their prayers, saying: \u201cI feel all your affection and closeness and, at this particular time, I feel as if I am \u2018carried\u2019 and supported by all God\u2019s people. Thank you all.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n
