How should we position ourselves so we can contribute to strengthening the country and getting to the other side of this nasty storm in the best possible shape? We\u2019ll need brains, creativity and empathy. Quiet competence, too. The two men enjoyed delicious eggs at <a data-evt-val=\"{\"control_fields\": {\"mparticle\": {\"keys\": {\"click_source_type\": \"click_source_type\", \"anchor_text\": \"anchor_text\", \"target_url\": \"target_url\", \"layout_section\": \"layout_section\"}, \"mp_event_type\": \"Navigation\", \"extra_keys\": [\"click_vertical_position_percentage\", \"click_vertical_position_pixels\"]}}, \"click_source_type\": \"in-page link\", \"anchor_text\": \"Johnu2019s Family Diner\", \"target_url\": \"https:\/\/bsky.app\/profile\/mayormarksutcliffe.bsky.social\/post\/3ljzqjuc6fc2d\", \"layout_section\": \"in-page-link\"}\" data-evt=\"click\" data-evt-typ=\"click\" href=\"https:\/\/bsky.app\/profile\/mayormarksutcliffe.bsky.social\/post\/3ljzqjuc6fc2d\">John\u2019s Family Diner<\/a> in Wellington West, the best breakfast joint in town, and discussed critical issues for the city.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith the prospect of an election coming soon, I would assume that the new administration is going to want to have some impact right away, make some things happen,\u201d Sutcliffe told the media. He pitched Carney his fairness campaign and stressed the need for support \u201caround building more homes in the city, around infrastructure, around public transit.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Good. We should not forget other urgent issues related to affordability and infrastructure. Climate and homelessness, too.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<section>\n<p>Article content<\/p>\n<p>There may not be a lot of appetite right now for investing in transit, affordable housing and other public goods. Protecting the economy and improving productivity are much more in vogue at the moment. Those of us who care about Ottawa being the best it can be need to frame our arguments in a different way.<\/p>\n<p>A prosperous city \u2014 indeed a prosperous nation \u2014 is one where people have a real choice about where to live and where humans and stuff move easily. Mobility and affordability, along with population health and public education, are critical if we aim to be our best. They are fundamental structures of strong and resilient societies, not luxuries. We need to repeat that at every turn.<\/p>\n<p data-async>Meanwhile, public sector unions are staking their ground by insisting we can\u2019t afford to pull a DOGE and fire public servants, as Elon Musk is doing. \u201cThis national crisis, which is without precedent, is not the time to start hollowing out our brain trust,\u201d <a data-evt-val=\"{\"control_fields\": {\"mparticle\": {\"keys\": {\"click_source_type\": \"click_source_type\", \"anchor_text\": \"anchor_text\", \"target_url\": \"target_url\", \"layout_section\": \"layout_section\"}, \"mp_event_type\": \"Navigation\", \"extra_keys\": [\"click_vertical_position_percentage\", \"click_vertical_position_pixels\"]}}, \"click_source_type\": \"in-page link\", \"anchor_text\": \"said\", \"target_url\": \"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/amp\/1.7479753\", \"layout_section\": \"in-page-link\"}\" data-evt=\"click\" data-evt-typ=\"click\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/amp\/1.7479753\">said<\/a> Canadian Association of Professional Employees (CAPE) president Nathan Prier.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<section>\n<p>Article content<\/p>\n<p>I don\u2019t know if it\u2019s possible to agree more than one thousand per cent with that sentiment, but I\u2019ll try.<\/p>\n<h3>Elon Musk must be very confused<\/h3>\n<p data-async>In addition to encouraging people to come up with smart and creative solutions to our problems, we\u2019ll need to make space for kindness and a strong sense of community. On a recent podcast, Musk claimed a civilization\u2019s biggest weakness<a data-evt-val=\"{\"control_fields\": {\"mparticle\": {\"keys\": {\"click_source_type\": \"click_source_type\", \"anchor_text\": \"anchor_text\", \"target_url\": \"target_url\", \"layout_section\": \"layout_section\"}, \"mp_event_type\": \"Navigation\", \"extra_keys\": [\"click_vertical_position_percentage\", \"click_vertical_position_pixels\"]}}, \"click_source_type\": \"in-page link\", \"anchor_text\": \" isu00a0empathy\", \"target_url\": \"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/03\/05\/politics\/elon-musk-rogan-interview-empathy-doge\/index.html\", \"layout_section\": \"in-page-link\"}\" data-evt=\"click\" data-evt-typ=\"click\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/03\/05\/politics\/elon-musk-rogan-interview-empathy-doge\/index.html\"> is\u00a0empathy<\/a>, an idea borrowed from a Concordia University marketing professor.<\/p>\n<p>I don\u2019t know if it\u2019s possible to disagree more than one thousand percent with that sentiment, but I\u2019ll try.<\/p>\n<p>Maybe Musk is confused about what empathy means? There is no way the ability to relate to another person\u2019s emotions makes a society weaker.<\/p>\n<p data-async>Ira Wells, a University of Toronto literature professor, recently wrote a piece <a data-evt-val=\"{\"control_fields\": {\"mparticle\": {\"keys\": {\"click_source_type\": \"click_source_type\", \"anchor_text\": \"anchor_text\", \"target_url\": \"target_url\", \"layout_section\": \"layout_section\"}, \"mp_event_type\": \"Navigation\", \"extra_keys\": [\"click_vertical_position_percentage\", \"click_vertical_position_pixels\"]}}, \"click_source_type\": \"in-page link\", \"anchor_text\": \"aboutu00a0Sesame Street\", \"target_url\": \"https:\/\/thewalrus.ca\/death-of-big-bird\/\", \"layout_section\": \"in-page-link\"}\" data-evt=\"click\" data-evt-typ=\"click\" href=\"https:\/\/thewalrus.ca\/death-of-big-bird\/\">about\u00a0Sesame Street<\/a>\u00a0in which he discussed at length the role and benefits of a strong sense of community as well as public institutions.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<section>\n<p>Article content<\/p>\n<p>He cited the CBC, schools and libraries as examples of the latter but you could also point to public places for people, walkable communities, the justice system or, yes, transit. Instead of seeing them as costly things whose benefits aren\u2019t always immediately obvious to the average taxpayer, we should present public institutions as a valuable \u201csource of common purpose.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s up to those of us who believe in this vision to show how public institutions are good for everyone by highlighting their benefits, especially the ones that are harder to see. We\u2019ll need our brains, our creativity and our empathy to do that.<\/p>\n<p>We have our work cut out for us, no question about it.
