had scotched that hope, and Trump was proceeding with the tariffs on Saturday after all, as originally threatened.<\/p>\n<p data-async>The conflicting reports underscore what <a data-evt-val=\"{\"control_fields\": {\"mparticle\": {\"keys\": {\"click_source_type\": \"click_source_type\", \"anchor_text\": \"anchor_text\", \"target_url\": \"target_url\", \"layout_section\": \"layout_section\"}, \"mp_event_type\": \"Navigation\", \"extra_keys\": [\"click_vertical_position_percentage\", \"click_vertical_position_pixels\"]}}, \"click_source_type\": \"in-page link\", U.S. tariffs on Canadian goods closes in, and B.C. tries to plan for their impact.<\/p>\n<p>Eby said during a virtual press conference that \u201cit\u2019s hard to make sense\u201d of exactly what has been happening with B.C.\u2019s \u201cclosest friend and trading partner.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He said his new \u201cwar room\u201d committee tasked with responding to the tariffs also met Friday morning, and provincial officials were working closely with business and labour leaders, as well as First Nations and other stakeholders.<\/p>\n<p data-async>The meeting included discussions about strengthening B.C.\u2019s <a data-evt-val=\"{\"control_fields\": {\"mparticle\": {\"keys\": {\"click_source_type\": \"click_source_type\", \"anchor_text\": \"anchor_text\", \"target_url\": \"target_url\", \"layout_section\": \"layout_section\"}, \"mp_event_type\": \"Navigation\", \"extra_keys\": [\"click_vertical_position_percentage\", \"click_vertical_position_pixels\"]}}, \"click_source_type\": \"in-page link\", \"anchor_text\": \"supply chains\", \"target_url\": \"https:\/\/financialpost.com\/tag\/supply-chains\/\", \"layout_section\": \"in-page-link\"}\" provinces, and helping people buy Canadian-made products, Eby said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve had a morning of chaos and confusion in terms of trying to understand what is happening at the White content<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<section>\n<p>Article content<\/p>\n<p>Eby said he hopes Trump listens to advisers about the harmful effects of the promised tariffs, but B.C. is \u201cready for the fight\u201d if the president\u2019s plan goes ahead on Saturday<\/p>\n<p>It was \u201chard not to think that this uncertainty (from) the White House, the chaos that seems to be coming from there, is actually part of an overall strategy to destabilize key trading partners,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>But rather than speculate, the premier said B.C. must prepare to support workers, families and businesses.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is obviously distressing, for people on both sides of the border whose jobs and livelihoods depend on a strong trading relationship between our two countries,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf, in fact, tomorrow morning, the president does impose tariffs of 25 per cent on British Columbia, I can assure you that we are ready for the fight. We will not roll over.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Bailey had earlier described the difficulty of forward planning the economy, after the annual meeting of the Economic Forecast Council for B.C., consisting of 13 independent forecasters from across Canada.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat I will share with you is that it\u2019s our expectation that the uncertainty that has been introduced into our economy is uncertainty that we are likely to experience for four years,\u201d Bailey said on a call with reporters, after the meeting that was open to media to observe on a background basis.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<section>\n<p>Article content<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe don\u2019t know whether the tariffs are coming in tomorrow or at a later date, and it\u2019s also uncertain as to which commodities and goods will be covered by tariffs and what level the tariffs will be at.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Bailey said that despite the expected instability over the four years of Trump\u2019s presidency, the council\u2019s private-sector forecasters indicated the province was in a good position to meet the challenges of the promised tariffs.<\/p>\n<p>She said in a statement that the council indicated the uncertainty of \u201cthreats from the south\u201d may make the budget process more challenging than usual.<\/p>\n<p>But she said the council told her the diversity of B.C.\u2019s economy made it well positioned to attract new investment and development opportunities.<\/p>\n<p>Council members also pointed to the difficulty of forecasting in the new Trump era.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur forecasts are essentially being updated on a weekly basis at this point. So for new data, for new information coming in, it\u2019s really a moving target,\u201d said Randall Bartlett, deputy chief economist for Desjardins, who attended the council meeting.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s the nature of the beast of trying to forecast, you know, decisions made by the Trump administration,\u201d he said in an interview.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<section>\n<p>Article content<\/p>\n<p>The Ministry of Finance statement said B.C.\u2019s outlook is affected by global and domestic forces, including federal immigration targets.<\/p>\n<p>Still, it said the forecasters \u201creaffirmed that in the absence of tariffs, they had expected steady economic growth for B.C.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf we\u2019re going to be under a 25 per cent tariff for all Canadian exports to the United States for an extended period of time then that means that the Canadian economy and likely the B.C. economy are headed for a very likely recession,\u201d Brendon Ogmundson, chief economist for the B.C.
