More than two years later, the company\u2019s Gemini AI models are among the top-ranked chatbots<\/a><\/span> on community-driven platform Chatbot Arena, alongside rivals from OpenAI. <\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s been like sprinting a marathon,\u201d Sissie Hsiao, vice president and general manager of Gemini app and Speech at Google, told Wired. Hsiao and more than 50 current and former Google employees spoke to the publication about the race to develop its AI models and products.<\/p>\n

Hsiao said the tech giant was asking for \u201cquality over speed, but fast\u201d when developing its chatbot, originally code-named Bard.<\/p>\n

After initially launching the experimental AI chatbot in February 2023 \u2014 months after ChatGPT\u2019s debut the previous November \u2014 Google was caught up in what Hsiao said was \u201can innocent mistake\u201d when the company\u2019s ad for Bard featured an incorrect answer<\/a><\/span>. <\/p>\n

By December of that year, Google attempted a comeback when it unveiled its renamed AI chatbot, Gemini, which outperformed ChatGPT in a majority of industry benchmarks<\/a><\/span>. <\/p>\n

The following February, Gemini hit another snag when its image generator made historically inaccurate images<\/a><\/span> of people, such as racially diverse Nazi-era German soldiers<\/a><\/span>. Hsiao reportedly gave the team time to fix the image generator before it rolled out the feature again<\/a><\/span> in August.<\/p>\n

Despite other missteps along the way, Google remains on par to some competitors, and ahead of others. Earlier this year, Alphabet chief executive Sundar Pichai said Google\u2019s AI leadership makes it \u201cconfident about the opportunities ahead,\u201d and that the company expects to invest $75 billion<\/a><\/span> in capital expenditures this year \u201cto accelerate our progress.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cOur results show the power of our differentiated full-stack approach to AI innovation and the continued strength of our core businesses,\u201d Pichai said in a statement about the company\u2019s fourth-quarter results. The quarter was \u201cdriven by\u201d leadership in AI, Pichai said, including the AI Overviews feature in Google Search.<\/p>\n

In December, Hsiao told Quartz that she sees the \u201cnext frontier\u201d of AI<\/a><\/span> in \u201cagentic<\/a><\/span> capabilities.\u201d <\/p>\n

Gemini, specifically, \u201cwill be deeply personalized, remember what you\u2019ve told it before, and at your direction \u2014 be able to act on your behalf across Google, third-party services, and the web,\u201d Hsiao said. Earlier this month, Google said it was experimenting with allowing Gemini<\/a><\/span> to personalize its responses by connecting with other Google apps, starting with Search.<\/p>\n

\u201cSince 2016, we\u2019ve said Google is an AI-first company, and that won\u2019t change,\u201d Hsiao told Quartz in December. \u201cAI is a must-have, and as we see it being integrated into every aspect of a company\u2019s operations from product development, customer service, to marketing, and sales \u2014 it\u2019s essential to embrace this technology in order to stay competitive.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
