{"id":833385,"date":"2025-03-12T08:11:59","date_gmt":"2025-03-12T13:11:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/newsycanuse.com\/index.php\/2025\/03\/12\/prefab-manchester-united-stadium-to-be-built-in-five-years\/"},"modified":"2025-03-12T08:11:59","modified_gmt":"2025-03-12T13:11:59","slug":"prefab-manchester-united-stadium-to-be-built-in-five-years","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/newsycanuse.com\/index.php\/2025\/03\/12\/prefab-manchester-united-stadium-to-be-built-in-five-years\/","title":{"rendered":"Prefab Manchester United stadium to be built \u2018in five years\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p>Manchester United\u2019s new stadium, announced by the club today, will be built in five years by using 160 prefabricated components shipped via the city\u2019s canal network, according to the scheme\u2019s architect.<\/p>\n<p>The club this morning (11 March) announced it would press ahead with a new plan to develop the new 100,000-seat stadium next to its existing ground, forming the centrepiece of a wider regeneration of the Old Trafford area.<\/p>\n<p>Architecture firm Foster + Partners is designing the new stadium and leading the masterplan for the regeneration of the local area.<\/p>\n<p>Sir Norman Foster, whose father worked in a Manchester factory, said: \u201cNormally a stadium would take 10 years to build. We have half that time \u2013 five years.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow do we do that? Prefabrication. By using the network of Manchester Ship Canal. Bringing it back to a new life, shipping in components \u2013 160 of them Meccano-like.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Conceptual stadium plans include a new public plaza and three 200-metre-high masts, which will support a lightweight \u201cumbrella\u201d roof to harvest solar energy and rainwater.<\/p>\n<p>Foster also touted the redevelopment of the railway station next to the stadium and the creation of \u201carguably\u201d the world\u2019s largest public square.<\/p>\n<p>A public consultation on the masterplan will be held before any plans are submitted.<\/p>\n<p>Club co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe said this morning (11 March) that the new stadium will form the centrepiece of a broader regeneration plan that would deliver 17,000 homes and up to \u00a37.3bn per year for the UK economy.<\/p>\n<p>He added: \u201cOur current stadium has served us brilliantly for the past 115 years, but it has fallen behind the best arenas in world sport. By building next to the existing site, we will be able to preserve the essence of Old Trafford&#8230; Just as important is the opportunity for a new stadium to be the catalyst for social and economic renewal of the Old Trafford area, creating jobs and investment not just during the construction phase but on a lasting basis when the stadium district is complete.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe government has identified infrastructure investment as a strategic priority, particularly in the North of England, and we are proud to be supporting that mission with this project of national, as well as local, significance.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Manchester United did not disclose the estimated value of the construction project, and\u00a0<em>Construction News\u00a0<\/em>asked the club for a timeline in appointing a contractor to the site.<\/p>\n<p>The football club had been considering two stadium options \u2013 an entirely new ground or expansion of Old Trafford, which was originally built in 1910 and currently has a capacity of 74,310.<\/p>\n<p>The latter option would have extended Old Trafford\u2019s capacity to 87,000, but the plan announced this morning would make it the largest stadium in the UK \u2013 bigger than the 90,000-capacity Wembley Stadium in London.<\/p>\n<p>Chancellor Rachel Reeves gave\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.constructionnews.co.uk\/government\/reeves-to-confirm-multiple-projects-for-oxford-cambridge-corridor-29-01-2025\/\">the government\u2019s formal backing to the regeneration scheme<\/a>\u00a0in January.<\/p>\n<p>Manchester mayor Andy Burnham said the regeneration impact \u201ccould be bigger and better than [the] London 2012\u201d Olympic Games regeneration project in Stratford.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur common goal [&#8230;] has been to try to unlock the full power of the club for the benefit of its supporters and for Greater Manchester as a whole \u2013 creating thousands of new homes and jobs,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>According to the Old Trafford Regeneration Task Force, which was set up to assess different options to regenerate the Old Trafford area, the new regeneration plan could deliver more than 90,000 jobs in total.<\/p>\n<p>Manchester United chief executive Omar Berrada said the club had \u201ccarefully\u201d considered the task force\u2019s findings, and the views of thousands of local residents and fans.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c[We have] concluded that a new stadium is the right way forward for Manchester United and our surrounding community,\u201d he said. \u201cWe will now embark on further consultation to ensure that fans and residents continue to be heard as we move towards final decisions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>If planning permission proceeds and construction begins at the new Old Trafford, it would be the latest in a number of new football grounds or stadium expansions in North West England.<\/p>\n<p>In December, Laing O\u2019Rourke\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.constructionnews.co.uk\/buildings\/laing-orourke-hands-over-everton-stadium-23-12-2024\/\">handed over Everton FC\u2019s new \u00a3550m stadium<\/a>\u00a0after three-and-a-half years\u2019 construction work, employing prefabricated techniques.<\/p>\n<p>Manchester United\u2019s local rivals Manchester City \u2013 the reigning Premier League champions \u2013 appointed John Sisk &#038; Son last May to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.constructionnews.co.uk\/buildings\/sisk-confirms-300m-man-city-stand-win-23-05-2024\/\">expand the Etihad Stadium<\/a>\u00a0by 7,900 seats with a new North Stand.<\/p>\n<p>This will raise capacity at the Etihad to 63,000 in time for the 2025\/26 football season.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.constructionnews.co.uk\/buildings\/manchester-united-push-forward-with-100000-seat-state-of-the-art-stadium-11-03-2025\/\" class=\"button purchase\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Read More<\/a><br \/>\n Joshua Stein<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Manchester United\u2019s new stadium, announced by the club today, will be built in five years by using 160 prefabricated components shipped via the city\u2019s canal network, according to the scheme\u2019s architect.
