He spent over 15 years in IT support before joining The Verge.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"zephr-anchor\">\n<p>The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) plans to vote on an inquiry to explore alternatives to GPS, FCC chair Brendan Carr <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fcc.gov\/news-events\/blog\/2025\/03\/05\/boosting-gps-and-911-usa\">says in a blog post<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Carr says that while GPS has been \u201cindispensable,\u201d the technology \u201cisn\u2019t infallible\u201d and that \u201cdisruptions to GPS have the potential to undermine the nation\u2019s economic and national security.\u201d Carr says that \u201cwe need to develop redundant technologies,\u201d which is why the FCC will \u201cvote on an inquiry to explore other Positioning, Navigation, and Timing (PNT) systems\u201d that can serve as \u201ccomplements or alternatives\u201d to GPS.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to GPS, Carr also says the commission will vote on two proposals regarding 911 technology. One is \u201ca proposal to update our existing rules to ensure the resiliency, reliability, interoperability, and accessibility\u201d of \u201cNext Generation 911,\u201d or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.911.gov\/issues\/ng911\/\">NG911<\/a>, which is internet-connected emergency tech that will eventually replace legacy 911 systems.<\/p>\n<p>Another is a proposal to \u201cstrengthen our 911 location accuracy rules\u201d to potentially improve the information first responders receive about a person\u2019s location, including the ability to more accurately find callers on specific floors in buildings.<\/p>\n<p>The issues are tentatively on the agenda for the FCC\u2019s open meeting <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fcc.gov\/March2025\">on March 27th<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/news\/625671\/fcc-vote-gps-911-technologies-inquiry\" class=\"button purchase\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Read More<\/a><br \/>\n Umar Shakir<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Umar Shakir is a news writer fond of the electric vehicle lifestyle and things that plug in via USB-C.
