{"id":831547,"date":"2025-03-04T14:11:57","date_gmt":"2025-03-04T20:11:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/newsycanuse.com\/index.php\/2025\/03\/04\/will-metas-revised-approach-to-moderation-impact-its-ad-business\/"},"modified":"2025-03-04T14:11:57","modified_gmt":"2025-03-04T20:11:57","slug":"will-metas-revised-approach-to-moderation-impact-its-ad-business","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/newsycanuse.com\/index.php\/2025\/03\/04\/will-metas-revised-approach-to-moderation-impact-its-ad-business\/","title":{"rendered":"Will Meta\u2019s Revised Approach to Moderation Impact its Ad Business?"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span>Will Meta\u2019s decision this week to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.socialmediatoday.com\/news\/meta-removes-fact-checking-adds-community-notes\/736700\/\">loosen its moderation rules<\/a>\u00a0and get rid of fact-checking make Facebook and Instagram less brand safe as a result?<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span><span><span>That seems to be what happened on X following Elon Musk\u2019s moves to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.socialmediatoday.com\/news\/x-has-significantly-fewer-moderation-staff\/714650\/\">reduce internal content moderation staff<\/a>\u00a0in favor of user-sourced Community Notes, with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.socialmediatoday.com\/news\/data-shows-x-suspending-far-fewer-users-hate-speech\/728136\/\">various reports and investigations<\/a> suggesting that the platform is no longer a safe place for brands to display their messages. Following these moves, X\u2019s ad revenue intake has declined <a href=\"https:\/\/en.as.com\/latest_news\/how-much-money-could-elon-musks-x-formerly-twitter-lose-with-the-loss-of-advertisers-n\/#:~:text=According%20to%20Reuters%2C%20X%20has%20lost%20ad,year%2Dover%2Dyear%20each%20month%20since%20Musk%20took%20over.\">by around 60%<\/a>.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span><span><span>A similar scenario could play out for Meta,\u00a0according to a wave of industry commentary on the news. But there are key differences between Meta and X that could affect how the situation unrolls.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span><span><span>For starters, part of X\u2019s problem in this respect has been Musk himself, and his propensity to generate headlines with his own statements and stances. Which is also Musk\u2019s strength, in that he\u2019s effectively the reason why his companies don\u2019t need to pay for ads, because Elon is a walking promotional department within himself.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span><span><span>But at X, with Elon taking increasingly controversial and divisive stances, while also being the platform\u2019s most followed user, the association between these views and the app has likely hurt the platform\u2019s reputation more than Meta\u2019s announced changes will.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span><span><span>Though at the same time, Meta\u2019s changes are controversial, and they will similarly lead to more harmful content being shown to users in its apps.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span><span><span>For example, based on the latest updates to Meta\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/transparency.meta.com\/en-gb\/policies\/community-standards\/hateful-conduct\/\">Hateful Conduct policy<\/a>, which were released today:<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span>Meta will no longer outright ban all use of slurs used to attack people on the basis of \u201ctheir protected characteristics.\u201d Protected characteristics include race, ethnicity and gender identity. So essentially, Meta has removed a clause that might stop people being targeted with terms based specifically on these elements. \u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span>Meta will now allow people to use terms relating to <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><span><span><span><span><span>sex or gender, even when used in an insulting way, within discussions relating to political or religious topics, \u201csuch as when discussing transgender rights, immigration, or homosexuality.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>\u201d So users will be allowed to use potentially harmful terms within these conversations, with Meta no longer looking to contextualize such, as it has in the recent past. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span>There have also been various changes designed to simplify the rules and facilitate more leeway around potentially insulting terms. Meta has also removed restrictions on comments that target people based on the suggestion, for example, that they may have spread COVID-19 (though this is now largely outdated either way). \u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span>Meta\u2019s also looking to take a more hands off approach, in general, within discussions around things like<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><span><span><span><span> immigration and gender identity, which are the subject of frequent political discourse and debate. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span><span><span><span>Essentially, Meta\u2019s now moved to reduce its rules to allow for more kinds of speech, while the reduction of internal moderation and external fact-checking staff will also lead to more of these comments seeing increased exposure in the app either way. Which means that there are going to be more offensive, harmful posts shown to more people in its apps.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span><span><span>Which Zuck himself acknowledges. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span><span><span>In his <a href=\"https:\/\/about.fb.com\/news\/2025\/01\/meta-more-speech-fewer-mistakes\/\">overview of the update<\/a>, Zuckerberg explained that:<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span><span><em><span>\u201cThe reality is that this is a trade-off. It means we\u2019re going to catch less bad stuff, but we\u2019ll also reduce the number of innocent people\u2019s posts and accounts that we accidentally take down.\u201d<\/span><\/em><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span><span><span>So more harmful posts will get through, and with over 3 billion daily active users, the scope of potential harm in this respect is significantly higher than it is on X.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span><span><span>So logically, that should see more advertisers reconsidering their approach to Facebook and IG, like they did with X. Though I suspect that we won\u2019t see the same backlash.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span><span><span>Because Facebook and Instagram do provide such broad reach, because they each have such huge audiences, and the potential of that is just too significant to cut out for many brands. So while it was relatively easy to take a moral stance on X, which has a fraction of Meta\u2019s audience, I just don\u2019t see brands being as willing to do the same this time around.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span><span><span>But realistically, that is what should happen. There should be the same types of critical reports around Meta ad placement, and the impacts that these changes will have for brands, because there will be impacts, the same as there were on X, and Meta should face the same scrutiny that X has for allowing such.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span><span><span>And again, it\u2019ll be worse on Facebook and Instagram, based on exposure potential alone. The relative harms here will be significant.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span><span><span>So, should you be reconsidering your approach to social media ads as a result?
