\n\tIn a watershed moment for India<\/a>\u2018s entertainment industry, the Music Composers Association of India (MCAI) and Screenwriters Association (SWA) have formalized a groundbreaking partnership that promises to reshape creative collaboration across Bollywood and beyond.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe milestone memorandum of understanding, inked after months of negotiations, establishes composers and lyricists as \u201cequal co-authors\u201d in song creation, designating both as \u201cprimary artists\u201d for credit purposes. The pact mandates separate contracts with producers, empowering both parties to negotiate independently as departmental heads.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cEvery note of music tells a story, and every word of a lyric brings it to life,\u201d said filmmaker-composer Vishal Bhardwaj<\/a>, who serves as MCAI president. The acclaimed multi-hyphenate behind \u201cKhufiya\u201d (2023), \u201cHaider\u201d (2014), and \u201cOmkara\u201d (2006) called the agreement \u201cmore than an agreement; it\u2019s a promise to ensure fair credit, respect, and independence for all who contribute to the magic of music.\u201d He added that the milestone was the result of \u201ca shared commitment to building a fair and collaborative future \u2013 one where creative contributions are recognized, valued, and protected.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tSWA general secretary Zama Habib, the screenwriter behind immensely popular Star India TV series \u201cAnupamaa\u201d and \u201cYeh Rishta Kya Kehlata Hai,\u201d characterized the MoU as a \u201cdeclaration\u201d that lyricists and music directors stand united as \u201cco-artists, ensuring fair credit, mutual respect, and professional independence.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tThe agreement emerged from extensive discussions between SWA\u2019s lyrics team featuring Puneet Sharma, Raj Shekhar, Hussain Haidry, Danish Javed, and Shellee, alongside MCAI representatives Indrajit Sharma and Vipin Mishra. Senior lyricists Sameer Anjaan, Mayur Puri, Swanand Kirkire and Varun Grover also contributed to the process.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cA music room with a composer and a lyricist who trust each other is a beautiful place,\u201d noted Raj Shekhar, Executive Committee Member of SWA and the pen behind hits for Netflix\u2019s \u201cMismatched,\u201d Sandeep Reddy Vanga\u2019s \u201cAnimal\u201d (2023) and Aanand L. Rai\u2019s \u201cTanu Weds Manu\u201d (2011). \u201cThis MoU will make the song-making process equal, transparent, responsible, and rewarding for both of them\u2026 This is historic.\u201d<\/p>\n
