Nigeria has a strong football heritage, especially in this tournament. However, that doesn\u2019t mean we can afford to be complacent. Other countries have improved, and there are no underdogs anymore. The team that prepares better and works harder will have the edge in the group.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut first, we must qualify for the World Cup by reaching the semi-finals before thinking about the U-20 AFCON title,\u201d Obuh stressed.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<figure id=\"attachment_150057\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-150057\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/soccernet.ng\/app\/uploads\/2025\/02\/imago1053083573-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"Soccer Nigeria's Flying Eagles celebrate WAFU B success. Photo by IMAGO<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h4>Nigeria: World Cup qualification the priority<\/h4>\n<p>Nigeria\u2019s Flying Eagles are the most successful team in the history of the U20 AFCON, with seven winner\u2019s medals as well as two silver medals and four bronze medals.<\/p>\n<p>However, Nigeria have not won the title in ten years last lifting the trophy in 2015 in Senegal.<\/p>\n<p>The pressure is on the <a href=\"https:\/\/soccernet.ng\/?s=Aliyu+Zubairu\">Aliyu Zubairu<\/a>-tutored current Flying Eagles to claim a record-extending eight title in Cote d\u2019Ivoire.<\/p>\n<p>Still, Obuh, who led Nigeria\u2019s U20 side to the quarter-finals of the 2011 FIFA U20 World Cup, urged the Flying Eagles to focus first on securing their ticket to the 2025 FIFA U20 World Cup in Chile.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cThe most important objective now is securing a World Cup ticket,\u201d Obuh reiterated. \u201cOnly after that can we focus on winning the U20 AFCON title.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<figure id=\"attachment_144258\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-144258\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/soccernet.ng\/app\/uploads\/2024\/12\/imago1053221586-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"Soccer Nigeria Flying Eagles WAFU B champions\" width=\"2560\" height=\"1707\"  ><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-144258\">Flying Eagles \u2013 Photo by IMAGO<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The top four teams at the U20 AFCON will qualify for the 2025 FIFA U20 World Cup, which will be held in Chile between September and October.<\/p>\n<h4>Obuh\u2019s experience in youth football<\/h4>\n<p>John Obuh is no stranger to youth football, having managed Nigeria at both U17 and U20 levels with varying degrees of success.<\/p>\n<p>As head coach of the Golden Eaglets, he led Nigeria to the final of the 2009 FIFA U17 World Cup on home soil, where they narrowly lost to Switzerland.
