{"id":829177,"date":"2025-02-23T10:12:03","date_gmt":"2025-02-23T16:12:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/newsycanuse.com\/index.php\/2025\/02\/23\/onside-behind-the-must-see-mls-documentary-on-apple-tv-mlssoccer-com\/"},"modified":"2025-02-23T10:12:03","modified_gmt":"2025-02-23T16:12:03","slug":"onside-behind-the-must-see-mls-documentary-on-apple-tv-mlssoccer-com","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/newsycanuse.com\/index.php\/2025\/02\/23\/onside-behind-the-must-see-mls-documentary-on-apple-tv-mlssoccer-com\/","title":{"rendered":"Onside: Behind the must-see MLS documentary on Apple TV+ | MLSSoccer.com"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Soccer <\/p>\n<div>\n<div>\n<p>\u200b\u200bHe\u2019s become known for finding the most compelling stories about Formula 1, tennis, golf and more, but Paul Martin\u2019s first love is soccer.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div>\n<p>A Southampton FC supporter, Martin played for decades and still follows the sport closely, even while serving as executive producer for documentary series like \u201cFormula 1: Drive to Survive,\u201d \u201cBreak Point\u201d and \u201cFull Swing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>While Martin also worked on documentaries about some of the game&#8217;s great figures, including Diego Maradona and Steven Gerrard, he hadn\u2019t yet tackled a project that looked at an entire soccer league until getting approached about <a href=\"https:\/\/apple.co\/onsidemls\">\u201cOnside: Major League Soccer\u201d<\/a>, the documentary series Martin executive produced alongside James Gay-Rees and Hillary Olsen that launched Feb. 21 on Apple TV+.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMLS was able to facilitate a level of access into the world\u2019s most popular sport that I just don\u2019t think you would get with some other leagues,\u201d Martin said of Box to Box Films\u2019 unique opportunity.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor what we do, that was incredibly exciting and enticing.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div>\n<p><h3><strong>In focus<\/strong><\/h3>\n<\/p>\n<p>Box to Box looked to isolate compelling narratives and storylines that shaped the 2024 MLS season, then went deep to provide perspective and insights that offer both hardcore fans a perspective they haven\u2019t yet seen and novice fans context that draws them in.<\/p>\n<p>Having become known for profiling athletes in individual sports, Martin said he and his team looked for characters and big personalities as storytelling vehicles \u2013 and found MLS was full of them.<\/p>\n<p>Martin was particularly interested in the yin and yang of managers on either side of the Hell is Real Derby. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mlssoccer.com\/clubs\/fc-cincinnati\/\">FC Cincinnati<\/a> head coach Pat Noonan\u2019s \u201cold-school, let\u2019s f&#8212;ing go get it\u201d spirit, as Martin put it, balanced against <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mlssoccer.com\/clubs\/columbus-crew\/\">Columbus Crew<\/a> boss Wilfried Nancy\u2019s \u201cholistic view\u201d honed from his roots in France and Canada.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou need to find those individual stories that operate on different levels and have that subtext where people can say, \u2018OK this is a story about Wilfried and Pat, but I can see it\u2019s representative of something bigger going on within those clubs, within those cities and within those leagues,&#8217;\u201d Martin said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s about finding stories that can operate on those levels.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div>\n<p>\n                                <iframe data-src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/wg5zVkzU9As?feature=oembed\" allowfullscreen title=\"Onside: Major League Soccer \u2014 Official Trailer | Apple TV+\"><\/iframe>\n                            <\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div>\n<p><h3><strong>Rising star<\/strong><\/h3>\n<\/p>\n<p>When presented with the idea of chronicling the rise of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mlssoccer.com\/clubs\/philadelphia-union\/\">Philadelphia Union<\/a> homegrown midfielder <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mlssoccer.com\/players\/cavan-sullivan\/\">Cavan Sullivan<\/a>, then a 14-year-old approaching his historic MLS debut, Martin&#8217;s storytelling instincts pushed against adding it to the list of potential <a href=\"https:\/\/apple.co\/onsidemls\">\u201cOnside\u201d<\/a> subjects.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFourteen-year-old kids don\u2019t make for great TV in this kind of space,\u201d he remembers thinking. \u201cThen I sat down with his family and they\u2019re incredible. Then you sit down with Cavan and you\u2019re like, \u2018Oh my God, this kid has to be in this show. Whatever \u2018it\u2019 is, he\u2019s got \u2018it\u2019 in abundance.&#8217;\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The access that appeals to a filmmaker like Martin may seem intrusive or unwanted, especially for someone like Sullivan, a teenager trying to balance his soccer career, social life and academics.<\/p>\n<p>Yet, the experienced crew that became famous for their fly-on-the-wall looks at other sports was largely unobtrusive and came away with insights that will help fans understand Sullivan and his family dynamic.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was certainly fun,\u201d Sullivan said. \u201cThe Box to Box crew created a great environment with my family. We met them in one day, and they were already eating dinner with us. It was strange. There was a mic guy, two people in the house, guys coming in and out of the van in my driveway, but it was easy to adapt.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div>\n<blockquote><p>\u2014 Apple TV (@AppleTV) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/AppleTV\/status\/1892767773689885052?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">February 21, 2025<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote><\/div>\n<div>\n<p><h3><strong>Narrative focus<\/strong><\/h3>\n<\/p>\n<p>The crew is always smaller than subjects expect, Martin said, and with the athletes focused on goals like winning MLS Cup, a World Drivers&#8217; Championship or an Olympic gold medal, they quickly move on to their performance rather than anything happening in the documentary.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve been around enough elite sportsmen and elite teams to know what happens is they\u2019re all obsessed with something bigger than our documentary series, right? They\u2019ve got a day job that consumes them on every level \u2013 and it has to,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEven though that\u2019s in their head, I guarantee that for most of them, it takes 10 minutes before they forget our cameras are even there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That shows up in the first episode of the eight-part MLS documentary, which spotlights a Matchday 1 clash between the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mlssoccer.com\/clubs\/la-galaxy\/\">LA Galaxy<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mlssoccer.com\/clubs\/inter-miami-cf\/\">Inter Miami CF<\/a>. That SoCal meeting of stars was an obvious choice for the <a href=\"https:\/\/apple.co\/onsidemls\">\u201cOnside\u201d<\/a> team to attend, given LA\u2019s trophy-rich history, as well as Inter Miami boasting legends <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mlssoccer.com\/players\/lionel-messi\/\">Lionel Messi<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mlssoccer.com\/players\/luis-suarez\/\">Luis Su\u00e1rez<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mlssoccer.com\/players\/jordi-alba\/\">Jordi Alba<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mlssoccer.com\/players\/sergio-busquets\/\">Sergio Busquets<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Fast forward to December and LA lifted their record sixth MLS Cup title, rallying around injured star <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mlssoccer.com\/players\/ricard-puig-marti\/\">Riqui Puig<\/a> \u2013 offering a natural bookend for the eighth and final episode.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div>\n<blockquote><p>\u2014 Major League Soccer (@MLS) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/MLS\/status\/1892612081913839799?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">February 20, 2025<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote><\/div>\n<div>\n<p><h3>Wider audience<\/h3>\n<\/p>\n<p>While sometimes <a href=\"https:\/\/tv.apple.com\/us\/show\/onside-major-league-soccer\/umc.cmc.3f1lyzz5mshnl8umwl9wipwgj\">\u201cOnside\u201d<\/a> was about being in the right place at the right time, Martin and his team took great lengths to determine how to tell these stories and package them in a way that would appeal to both MLS fans who have followed the league since 1996 and new waves of fans \u2013 both domestic and international.<\/p>\n<p>Unlike F1, Martin figures most people have a baseline understanding of how a soccer game is played and what the sport looks like. That made him commit even more to selecting the <em>right<\/em> stories and telling them in the <em>right<\/em> way.<\/p>\n<p>The end product is something Martin believes will appeal to lifelong soccer supporters like him and casuals alike.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think what I really enjoy about watching this show is you see the same levels of passion, of dedication, of sacrifice as you do in any major soccer league around the world.
