At least once a year, I\u2019d get an ab strain. For me, I want to say it\u2019s more the way my serve is \u2014 it\u2019s quite explosive,\u201d Osaka said, explaining that she got hurt at a tournament in Beijing, where she retired from a match against Coco Gauff on Oct. 1. \u201cUnfortunately, it carried on over to the beginning of this season.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This was Osaka\u2019s first run to the\u00a0third round at a major tournament since 2022. She missed time in recent seasons because of mental-health breaks, then was off the tour while pregnant.<\/p>\n<figure>\n<div>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/nypost.com\/#\" aria-controls=\"nyp-slideshow-modal\" data-slideshow-modal=\"trigger\" title=\"Open a slideshow of all 5 article images.\" aria-label=\"Open a slideshow of all 5 article images.\" data-slideshow-slide-number=\"1\" data-slideshow-slides-total=\"5\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"885\" height=\"590\" src=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2025\/01\/japans-naomi-osaka-leaves-court-96833019.jpg?w=1024\" alt=\"Naomi Osaka waves to the crowd after retiring from her third-round match at the Australian Open because of an injury on Jan. 17, 2025.\"  ><\/a><\/p>\n<\/div><figcaption>Naomi Osaka waves to the crowd after retiring from her third-round match at the Australian Open because of an injury on Jan. 17, 2025. <span>AFP via Getty Images<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Her daughter, Shai,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/01\/06\/sports\/naomi-osaka-and-rapper-cordae-break-up-after-five-years-together\/\">was born in July 2023.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Osaka began 2025 by making it to the final of a tournament at Auckland, New Zealand, on Jan. 5, but she stopped playing in the title match there because of the abdominal injury.<\/p>\n<p>Then, she said, the problem got \u201cway worse\u201d after her second-round win in Melbourne on Wednesday against 2023 French Open finalist Karolina Muchova.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was, I guess, a little inevitable, but I think the competitor in me just wanted to see it through to the end,\u201d Osaka said. \u201cI just hope that I can figure it out and figure out how to get healthy in time\u201d before the tour heads to events at Indian Wells and Miami in March, she added.<\/p>\n<p>On Friday, Osaka \u2014 a former No. 1-ranked player who owns a total of four Grand Slam titles \u2014 was visited by a trainer during the changeover while she led 6-5.
