\n\tA24 is closing on acquiring worldwide rights to \u201cSorry, Baby,\u201d one of the buzzier movies to premiere at this year\u2019s Sundance Film Festival<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe movie sparked a days-long bidding war with Neon and Mubi among the independent studios in the mix. Sources say the price tag is near the $8 million mark.<\/p>\n

\n\tAs the logline for \u201cSorry, Baby\u201d teases: \u201cSomething bad happened to Agnes. But life goes on\u2026 for everyone around her, at least.\u201d Comedian Eva Victor wrote, directed and stars in the film, about a college professor who is recovering from sexual assault. Naomi Ackie and Lucas Hedges co-star in \u201cSorry, Baby,\u201d which was produced by \u201cMoonlight\u201d filmmaker Barry Jenkins. The movie premiered on Monday night at the Eccles Theatre, where the audience in Park City embraced the poignant drama with a standing ovation.<\/p>\n

\n\tIn Variety\u2019s<\/em> review, chief film critic Peter Debruge described the movie as a \u201cdisarmingly funny, slow-to-unfold debut.\u201d \u201cIt\u2019s no easy task to make a film about trauma when one\u2019s elders \u2014 those who make the rules and gatekeep the opportunities \u2014 still feel the appropriate response to adversity is to toughen up and soldier on,\u201d he wrote in his review<\/a>. \u201cIf \u2018Sorry, Baby\u2019 works, it\u2019s because Victor strikes such a tricky tone: [Their] debut is warm and compassionate, advancing a conversation for which we\u2019re still trying to find the words.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tIt\u2019s been a glacially slow market at Sundance, with only two other films landing a sale so far. Seven days into the festival, Neon nabbed \u201cTogether,\u201d<\/a> a body-horror thriller starring real-life couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie, for somewhere between $10 million and $15 million. And Netflix nabbed the Joel Edgerton and Felicity Jones drama<\/a> \u201cTrain Dreams\u201d a day later. Several talked-about titles, like Dylan O\u2019Brien\u2019s dark comedy \u201cTwinless,\u201d Jennifer Lopez\u2019s Technicolor \u201cKiss of the Spider Woman\u201d musical adaptation, and the Marlee Matlin documentary \u201cNot Alone Anymore,\u201d remain without buyers.<\/p>\n

\n\tUTA Independent Film Group structured the financing and negotiated the deal for \u201cSorry, Baby\u201d on behalf of the filmmakers. Charades handled international sales and co-repped in the U.S. Victor is repped by CAA, Management 360 and Felker Toczek.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
