{"id":826768,"date":"2025-02-13T13:12:12","date_gmt":"2025-02-13T19:12:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/newsycanuse.com\/index.php\/2025\/02\/13\/health-warning-as-latest-study-reveals-cooking-oil-linked-to-colon-cancer\/"},"modified":"2025-02-13T13:12:12","modified_gmt":"2025-02-13T19:12:12","slug":"health-warning-as-latest-study-reveals-cooking-oil-linked-to-colon-cancer","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/newsycanuse.com\/index.php\/2025\/02\/13\/health-warning-as-latest-study-reveals-cooking-oil-linked-to-colon-cancer\/","title":{"rendered":"Health warning as latest study reveals cooking oil linked to colon cancer"},"content":{"rendered":"<div xmlns:xlink=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/1999\/xlink\">\n<figure>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" width=\"646\" height=\"431\" src=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/SEI_233790570-8dd1.jpg?quality=90&#038;strip=all&#038;w=646\" alt=\"Pouring food oil in hot pan for deep frying.\" decoding=\"sync\">\t<\/p><figcaption>Experts have weighed in (Picture: Getty Images\/iStockphoto)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><a data-ico=\"hyperlink-article\" href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/2024\/06\/04\/deadly-diets-fuelling-rise-colon-cancer-young-20969377\/\">Colon cancer<\/a> could be caused by certain types of cooking oils, a new study has warned.<\/p>\n<p>Oils like sunflower, canola, corn and grapeseed have been highlighted as oils of concern.<\/p>\n<p>The piece published in the medical journal <a href=\"https:\/\/gut.bmj.com\/content\/early\/2024\/11\/26\/gutjnl-2024-332535\">Gut<\/a> analysed 80 patients with colon cancers in the <a data-ico=\"hyperlink-article\" href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/tag\/us-news\/\" data-track=\"inline-tag-auto-link_article\">US<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>It found the cooking oils increased the risk of developing colon <a data-ico=\"hyperlink-article\" href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/tag\/cancer\/\" data-track=\"inline-tag-auto-link_article\">cancer<\/a> in the patients aged between 30 to 85.<\/p>\n<p>The research found people should swap seed oils for oils that contain omega-3 fatty acids like olive and avocado oil.<\/p>\n<p>Seed oils are responsible for higher levels of lipids that produce fat compounds in the body \u2013 and more than 25% of the calories in our diets come from eight seed oils: rapeseed, sunflower, flaxseed, corn, grapeseed, soybean, rice bran, and safflower.<\/p>\n<figure>\n<p><img width=\"646\" height=\"431\" src=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/SEI_232957190-0855.jpg?quality=90&#038;strip=all&#038;w=646\" alt=\"Woman pouring cooking oil from bottle into frying pan on stove, above view\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\">\t<\/p><figcaption>Certain cooking oils could be responsible for colon cancer cases, a new study has found (Picture: Getty Images)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>These oils also lead to inflammation in the body because they contain omega-6 and polyunsaturated fatty acids.<\/p>\n<p>Tim Yeatman, a professor of surgery and lead author of the study, told Good Health: \u2018Eating excess omega 6s results in excess pro-inflammatory lipid [i.e. fats] mediators, which results in an immuno-suppressed environment of the colon cancer. <\/p>\n<p>\u2018And I think it allows [the cancer] to grow and prosper and propagate.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>He suggests swapping to oils with more omega 3s, like olive or avocado oil, adding: \u2018Olive oil has many proven health benefits and is a central component in the Mediterranean diet consistently shown to be the healthiest eating pattern. <\/p>\n<p>\u2018Avocado oil, too, has benefits for heart and eye health and more.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Main cancer bodies in the US though say there is no evidence moderate consumption contributes to a rise.<\/p>\n<p>Seed oils were originally invented by candle maker William Procter in the 1900s.<\/p>\n<p>They soon became a staple to be used across America and the world.<\/p>\n<p>The rise in obesity and type 2 diabetes have been linked to increase seed oil consumption \u2013 but Sarah Berry, a professor in the Department of Nutritional Sciences at King\u2019s College London, suggests the growing amount of processed food in our diets may be the actual cause.<\/p>\n<p>She said: \u2018A lot of ultra-processed foods contain seed oils \u2013 but they also contain high levels of sugar, salt and other additives, while lacking nutrients.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018So\u00a0eating a lot of ultra-processed foods which contain seed oils might be linked to an increased risk of obesity and other conditions, but it\u2019s not the seed oils that are to blame.\u2019<\/p>\n<figure>\n<p><img width=\"646\" height=\"431\" src=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/SEI_232957112-ca2b.jpg?quality=90&#038;strip=all&#038;w=646\" alt=\"Woman choosing sunflower oil in the supermarket.
