{"id":825580,"date":"2025-02-09T07:11:43","date_gmt":"2025-02-09T13:11:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/newsycanuse.com\/index.php\/2025\/02\/09\/skanska-joins-mcalpine-on-1-25bn-port-talbot-job\/"},"modified":"2025-02-09T07:11:43","modified_gmt":"2025-02-09T13:11:43","slug":"skanska-joins-mcalpine-on-1-25bn-port-talbot-job","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/newsycanuse.com\/index.php\/2025\/02\/09\/skanska-joins-mcalpine-on-1-25bn-port-talbot-job\/","title":{"rendered":"Skanska joins McAlpine on \u00a31.25bn Port Talbot job\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"wrapper_sleeve\">\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"620\" height=\"414\" src=\"https:\/\/emap-romulus-prod.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/2025\/01\/Tata-Steels-Port-Talbot-steelworks.jpg\"   alt=\"Tata-Steels-Port-Talbot-steelworks.jpg\"><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Skanska has been picked to provide design advice and project management for the \u00a31.25bn electric arc furnace development at Port Talbot.<\/p>\n<p>Skanska Technology, the group\u2019s UK consultancy arm, has been working on the mega-project for more than four months \u2013 but has now signed a deal with Tata Steel to help deliver the works.<span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Last month, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.constructionnews.co.uk\/civils\/mcalpine-wins-key-role-on-1-25bn-port-talbot-steelworks-28-01-2025\/\">Sir Robert McAlpine was named as main contractor for the scheme<\/a>, which will see the historic South Wales steelmaking site transition to producing low-carbon steel.<span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.constructionnews.co.uk\/contractors\/skanska\/\">Skanska<\/a> will provide civil and structural design for key parts of the project, including building foundations, structures and the electric arc furnace itself. It will also design site infrastructure and drainage.<span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The consultancy work, understood to be worth in the low millions of pounds, will be managed by Skanska\u2019s team in Bridgend, with some of the firm\u2019s staff embedded with the client and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.constructionnews.co.uk\/contractors\/sir-robert-mcalpine\/\">Sir Robert McAlpine<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Skanska has previously had some project management staff seconded at Tata on a time charged basis, with some small engineering tasks having been completed on a lump sum basis.<span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The new electric arc furnace will replace the site\u2019s decommissioned iron and steelmaking facilities, producing up to three million tonnes of steel annually while reducing the site\u2019s steelmaking carbon emissions by 90 per cent.<span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Skanska UK engineering and design director Susan Ryall said: \u201cWe have been working closely with Tata Steel for the past four years, developing the design and project management solution for this complex scheme.<span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have a long history of delivering civil engineering works at Port Talbot.
