Ireland\u2019s newly appointed minister for AI oversight has admitted that she\u2019s never used ChatGPT and hasn\u2019t yet downloaded the hot new chatbot DeepSeek<\/a> to her phone, the Irish Independent reported<\/a> on Tuesday.<\/p>\n

Niamh Smyth\u2019s new role as junior minister at the Department of Enterprise, Trade and Employment involves responsibilities for trade promotion, AI, and digital transformation.<\/p>\n

Commenting on the transformative technology, Smyth said that it\u2019s \u201call a new learning curve, but I will learn fast and apply myself to the new role,\u201d adding that she felt she knew \u201cas much as any colleague\u201d after leading briefings on the subject in recent months.<\/p>\n

Smyth said that one of her immediate concerns about the AI-powered technology is the degree to which high-school students may be using it to take care of their homework, though she\u2019s also looking at the \u201cimportance of supporting businesses and providing education around the benefits of artificial intelligence to create efficiencies to demystify the use of AI.\u201d<\/p>\n

The story has echoes of the bizarre episode in 2018 when Japan appointed a cyber-security minister who then admitted that he\u2019d never used a computer<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cSince I was 25 years old and independent I have instructed my staff and secretaries \u2014 I have never used a computer in my life,\u201d 68-year-old Yoshitaka Sakurada told said in comments translated by the Kyodo news agency.<\/p>\n

During a parliamentary session, Sakurada drew criticism<\/a> when he appeared confused about basic technology-related questions. An opposition lawmaker expressed shock, saying: \u201cI find it unbelievable that someone who is responsible for cybersecurity measures has never used a computer.\u201d<\/p>\n

Sakurada resigned from the post about six months later, though the reason for his departure was unrelated to his admission about never having used a computer.<\/p>\n

The AI industry is abuzz with chatter about a new large language model that is taking the fight to the industry\u2019s top dogs like OpenAI and Anthropic. But not without its generous share of surprises. The name is DeepSeek.<\/p>\n

In an X post Monday commenting on DeepSeek’s sudden success, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman promised to “pull up some releases” and it appears he has done so. OpenAI unveiled its newest product on Tuesday, a “tailored version of ChatGPT designed to provide U.S. government agencies with an additional way to access OpenAI\u2019s frontier models,” per the announcement post. ChatGPT Gov will reportedly offer even tighter data security measures than ChatGPT Enterprise, but how will it handle the hallucinations that plague the company’s other models?<\/p>\n

According to OpenAI, more than 90,000 federal, state, and local government employees across 3,500 agencies have queried ChatGPT more than 18 million times since the start of 2024. The new platform will enable government agencies to enter \u201cnon-public, sensitive information\u201d into ChatGPT while it runs within their secure hosting environments — specifically, the Microsoft Azure commercial cloud or Azure Government community cloud — and cybersecurity frameworks like IL5 or CJIS. This enables each agency to “manage their own security, privacy and compliance requirements,\u201d Felipe Millon, Government Sales lead at OpenAI told reporters on the press call Tuesday.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n
