This move could position the CNB as the first Western central bank to incorporate Bitcoin into its reserve assets and comes as various US states have tabled bills to follow the same path. The bank\u2019s Governor, Ale\u0161 Michl, stated that he recognizes the cryptocurrency\u2019s volatility but believes it offers valuable diversification benefits.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Bitcoins <span>CNB Eyes Asset Diversification<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span>Governor Michl explained the CNB\u2019s plans in a recent <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/a3c06f8f-34ad-4065-bcf4-97670230824f\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><span>interview<\/span><\/a><span>, where he outlined his desire to present a proposal to the CNB\u2019s board to invest in Bitcoin, aiming to diversify the bank\u2019s assets:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span>For the diversification of our assets, bitcoin seems good. Those [Trump] guys can now kind of create some bubble for bitcoin, but I think the trend would be an increase without those guys as well, because it\u2019s an alternative [investment] for more people.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span>Michl added that if the board approves his proposal, the CNB could allocate up to 5% of its \u20ac140 billion reserves, approximately \u20ac7 billion ($7.3 billion), into Bitcoin.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Michl acknowledged Bitcoin\u2019s \u201cextreme volatility\u201d but noted the increasing interest from investors, especially following the launch of Bitcoin exchange-traded funds by firms like BlackRock. He believes that Bitcoin\u2019s value is likely to rise independently of external endorsements, viewing it as an alternative investment for many people.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Bitcoins <span>\u201cLet\u2019s Have It\u201d<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span>If implemented, this strategy would make the CNB the first Western central bank to hold cryptocurrency in its reserves, amomve that could influence other central banks to consider similar diversification strategies.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>However, Michl is aware of the risks, acknowledging that the investment could prove to be worthless; he emphasized that the goal is to diversify the portfolio, stating, \u201cIf Bitcoin is good [for that], then let\u2019s have it.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>This proposal reflects a significant shift in central banking investment strategies, highlighting the evolving perception of cryptocurrencies in global finance.
