Thousands of miles from Washington, where the funeral of Jimmy\u00a0Carter<\/a>\u00a0is set for next week, an\u00a0Indian village named after the former U.S. president fondly remembers his visit almost 50 years ago, paying tribute.<\/p>\n

A one-term president from 1977,\u00a0Carter, who\u00a0died on Sunday\u00a0<\/a>at <\/a>age 100<\/a>, is to be given a\u00a0state funeral\u00a0at the Washington National Cathedral on Thursday.<\/p>\n

Carterpuri, or the \u201cVillage of\u00a0Carter,\u201d is a dusty hamlet about 20 miles outside Delhi. It was called Daulatpur Nasirabad when\u00a0Carter\u2019s mother, Lillian, briefly lived and worked there as a nurse and volunteer in the 1960s.<\/p>\n

\u201cVillagers dressed his wife in traditional attire … He (Carter) also tried out a hookah,\u201d one resident, Moti Ram, recalled of the time\u00a0Carter, accompanied by his wife, Rosalynn, walked through the village.<\/p>\n

Preparations were made months in advance of the visit on Jan. 3, 1978, some villagers told news agency ANI, in which Reuters has a minority stake. The village was spruced up, and welcome programs were held in its main square.<\/p>\n

So taken were the residents by the\u00a0Carters\u2019 visit that they changed the name of their village in his honor.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

This week, on hearing of his death, they paid tribute to\u00a0Carter\u00a0by garlanding a framed picture of him and offering flowers before it, media said.<\/p>\n

Eric Garcetti, the U.S. ambassador to\u00a0India, mentioned the village in a post on X<\/a> after\u00a0Carter\u2019s death, saying it was a \u201ctestament to the high regard in which he was held here in\u00a0India.\u201d<\/p>\n

He posted a picture from the visit that showed Rosalynn, dressed in traditional attire, laughing, as\u00a0Carter\u00a0stood beside her surrounded by a crowd of villagers.<\/p>\n

A letter that\u00a0Carter\u00a0sent later, thanking residents for their efforts in making the event \u201csuccessful and so personally satisfying,\u201d is among the village\u2019s most prized possessions, along with the photographs.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
