The parents of Sam Bankman-Fried<\/a> (SBF) are exploring potential avenues to secure a presidential pardon from President Donald Trump<\/a>, Bloomberg News reported on Jan. 30, citing a person familiar with the matter.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Stanford Law School professors Joseph Bankman and Barbara Fried have reportedly engaged in discussions with lawyers and individuals within Trump\u2019s orbit in recent weeks.<\/span><\/p>\n

While it remains unclear whether they have made direct outreach to the White House, their efforts signal an attempt to seek clemency for their 32-year-old son, who was sentenced to 25 years in prison for fraud.<\/span><\/p>\n

SBF\u2019s parents and the White House declined to comment. A lawyer representing SBF, who has already filed an appeal against his 2023 conviction related to the collapse of FTX<\/a>, did not immediately respond to inquiries.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Run for pardons<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Trump\u2019s swift use of the presidential pardon, including the recent commutation of Silk Road founder Ross Ulbricht\u2019s life sentence, has sparked a surge in requests from high-profile white-collar criminals.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Jeffrey Grant, a legal adviser for white-collar defendants, noted that he has received around 100 pardons-related inquiries.<\/span><\/p>\n

He said:<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

\u201cWe have been hearing from people in prison, from people recently sentenced who haven\u2019t yet reported to the Bureau of Prisons, from people who have just been indicted. They are looking for somebody who knows somebody.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

However, SBF does not currently enjoy the widespread support that Ulbricht had. He has argued that his 25-year sentence is excessively harsh, particularly since many FTX customers have recovered most of their lost funds.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Another former FTX executive, Ryan Salame<\/a>, who received a seven-year sentence, has also expressed interest in a presidential pardon.<\/span><\/p>\n

Sam Mangel, a white-collar prison consultant who has previously worked on clemency requests for Trump allies Steve Bannon and Peter Navarro, said he handles multiple cases.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

He also shared that he has received informal guidance that cases related to sex crimes, true crimes of violence, and illegal immigration cases will not be considered.<\/span><\/p>\n
