{"id":823181,"date":"2025-01-31T00:12:12","date_gmt":"2025-01-31T06:12:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/newsycanuse.com\/index.php\/2025\/01\/31\/husker-dan-from-the-email-bag\/"},"modified":"2025-01-31T00:12:12","modified_gmt":"2025-01-31T06:12:12","slug":"husker-dan-from-the-email-bag","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/newsycanuse.com\/index.php\/2025\/01\/31\/husker-dan-from-the-email-bag\/","title":{"rendered":"Husker Dan: From The Email Bag"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Football <\/p>\n<div>\n<p data-mm-id=\"_zw8mfonth\"><strong>Husker Dan:<\/strong><br \/>Why are so many players leaving the Husker football program?\u00a0 We&#8217;ve lost some really good kids.\u00a0 What&#8217;s going on?<br \/>Pearl Lee Gates<br \/>Mountain Home, AR<\/p>\n<p data-mm-id=\"_acwjpkrm8\">Pearl:\u00a0 There are many reasons why football players are leaving.\u00a0 Before this year&#8217;s NCAA 105 roster limit, the top reasons were:\u00a0 a need for more playing time, coaching\u00a0changes, family issues and a chance to play for a better program.<\/p>\n<p data-mm-id=\"_qmatl18u5\">When the roster limits, NIL and transfer portal options are\u00a0thrown in, players are now leaving for much different reasons.\u00a0 Nebraska began the 2024 season with a roster of about 150 players.\u00a0 When\u00a0all the additions and deletions are tallied, NU still has about 35 players too many.\u00a0 It&#8217;s sad to say, but NU no longer has room for walk-ons or other marginal players.<\/p>\n<p data-mm-id=\"_de9dv98vh\">The next biggest\u00a0 reason for leaving is money.\u00a0 It&#8217;s the Wild West when it comes to football programs outbidding for players.\u00a0 Ohio State&#8217;s roster has been reported to have cost OSU over $20 million.\u00a0 And look what that got them:\u00a0 the 2024 national championship.<\/p>\n<p data-mm-id=\"_nkzxnqe3r\">Such is the world of college football as it stands today.<\/p>\n<p data-mm-id=\"_rwhc4m3je\"><strong>Husker Dan:<\/strong><br \/>I remember the great Husker teams under Devaney and Osborne.\u00a0 My question is, do you think Nebraska will ever return to the kind of dominance in college football?<br \/>Howie Duzzitt<br \/>Bellbrook, OH<\/p>\n<p data-mm-id=\"_l8zmedz45\">Howie:\u00a0 I&#8217;ll answer your question in just a minute.\u00a0 First let me offer my support for Matt Rhule. I believe his recent overhaul of his staff will reap big dividends down the road.<\/p>\n<p data-mm-id=\"_wr4k3vspm\">Having said that, Husker fans are still going to need to proceed with caution as we enter into the &#8217;25 season.\u00a0 Why?<\/p>\n<p data-mm-id=\"_wwlwhqw0b\">Because Rhule has entered territory he&#8217;s never been in.\u00a0 What do I mean?<\/p>\n<p data-mm-id=\"_5301brlr6\">Quick:\u00a0 How many wins have Matt Rhule&#8217;s teams had over Top Ten teams?<br \/>Answer:\u00a0 Zero.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p data-mm-id=\"_j1weghfdb\">How many conference titles have his teams won during his career?<br \/>Answer:\u00a0 Zero.<\/p>\n<p data-mm-id=\"_ypn9id8mt\">What is his record over Top 25 teams?\u00a0\u00a0<br \/>Answer:\u00a0 2-20<\/p>\n<p data-mm-id=\"_fp1gk50th\">So does that make Rhule a bad coach?\u00a0 No.\u00a0 But Husker fans need to know that Rhule is still learning.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p data-mm-id=\"_i3689auic\">To answer your question about the Huskers returning to the Golden Age , I say yes.\u00a0 \u00a0But my response comes with one very big caveat:\u00a0 The Huskers must first find a way to stop beating themselves.\u00a0 It makes no sense that a football program that has some of the best facilities, has a rich history of winning, has an incredible and loyal fan base and has plenty of money, hasn&#8217;t found a way to stop beating itself.<\/p>\n<p data-mm-id=\"_6rsij5kx9\">Former Patriots head coach Bill Belichick said (and I&#8217;m paraphrasing):\u00a0<br \/>You can&#8217;t expect to win until you figure out how to stop losing.<\/p>\n<p data-mm-id=\"_8y98ypa31\"><strong>Husker Dan:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-mm-id=\"_fjibbq0e8\">Do you remember when Michigan QB, Kyle McCord came to Lincoln in December of &#8217;23 looking for a team he could transfer to?\u00a0 He ended up at Syracuse where he posted some incredible numbers.\u00a0 If he&#8217;d transferred to Nebraska, Dylan Raiola could have redshirted and NU would have won a lot more games this\u00a0past year.\u00a0 What say you?<br \/>Jack Dupp<br \/>Portland, OR<\/p>\n<p data-mm-id=\"_hq703qp2o\">Jack:\u00a0 It&#8217;s tempting to play the what if game.\u00a0 To your point, McCord put up some really amazing numbers for the Orangemen.\u00a0 He completed 66.0% of his passes for 4,779 yards, 34 TDs and 13 INTs.\u00a0 Syracuse also went 10-3 for the season.<\/p>\n<p data-mm-id=\"_k3ehqpgy3\">It could also be said that had McCord committed to Nebraska, Dylan Raiola might not have come to Nebraska.\u00a0 McCord has exhausted his eligibility, Dylan has three more years.<\/p>\n<h3 data-mm-id=\"_6fexfp0ow\"><strong>Cook Steps Down<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p data-mm-id=\"_jdtats40u\">When I heard the news today about John Cook retiring as the Husker head volleyball coach, I surprised myself.\u00a0 Rather than wringing my hands and being upset, I was happy for Coach Cook.\u00a0 What more does he have to prove?\u00a0 He leaves at the top of his game.\u00a0 The pain of his leaving was eased with the news that his successor is Dani Busboom Kelly who played for Cook at Nebraska. <br \/>Dani is a great coach and she&#8217;ll do amazing things at Nebraska.<\/p>\n<p data-mm-id=\"_hag988t3x\">Now John Cook will have time to enjoy his ranch and his horses.\u00a0 Nebraska has been blessed to have had him for so long.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p data-mm-id=\"_cu6bi8o5i\">Happy trails, Coach!<\/p>\n<h3 data-mm-id=\"_xb2anz749\"><strong>How &#8216;Bout Them Huskers<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p data-mm-id=\"_d3iv81o76\">In this week&#8217;s episode, Will and I talk about some possible depth charts for this fall&#8217;s Husker football team.\u00a0 Nebraska women&#8217;s basketball has managed to keep winning despite season ending injuries to Allison Weidner and Natalie Potts.\u00a0 We also mourn the passing of former Husker running back, Calvin Jones.<\/p>\n<figure data-mm-id=\"_g6f3ah4ke\"><\/figure>\n<h3 data-mm-id=\"_2eo3jbb2g\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.si.com\/college\/nebraska\/basketball\/i-80-club-special-announcement-nebrasketball-continued-struggles-cornhuskers-big-ten\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>MORE:  I-80 Club: Special Announcement, John Cook&#8217;s Retirement, &#038;
