To help you get organised, here are some of the key dates for 2025, including when to file your annual tax returns by.<\/p>\n<div id=\"articleBody\">\n<p>Generally speaking, anyone who\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thelocal.it\/20240917\/how-does-italy-decide-if-im-a-tax-resident-in-the-country\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">considered to be a resident in Italy for tax purposes<\/a> (known as being a fiscal resident) has to declare and pay taxes on their worldwide income, meaning earnings generated anywhere in the world.<\/p>\n<p>But non-residents who own property or generate part of their income in Italy will also have to pay at least some <em>tasse<\/em> in the country.<\/p>\n<p><strong>READ ALSO: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thelocal.it\/20240917\/how-does-italy-decide-if-im-a-tax-resident-in-the-country\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">How does Italy decide if I&#8217;m a tax resident in the country?<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Figuring out what exactly you need to pay and when payments are due is not always straightforward.<\/p>\n<p>And even when you know what your tax obligations are, the country\u2019s notorious red tape plus a long list of puzzling tax-related acronyms (Irpef, Ires, Imu, just to name a few) can make filing and paying here a daunting proposition.<\/p>\n<p>To help you get organised, here are some of the key dates for 2025, including the deadline to file your annual tax declarations.<\/p>\n<p><strong>January 31st<\/strong>: Deadline to opt out of Italy\u2019s TV licence fee (often referred to as<em> canone<\/em>).\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Italy\u2019s TV licensing is based on an opt-out rather than opt-in system, with the \u20ac90 fee being <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thelocal.it\/20201116\/explained-how-to-pay-or-cancel-your-italian-tv-licence\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">automatically added<\/a> to a household\u2019s electricity bill.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Homeowners who don\u2019t have a TV set must complete and submit the relevant <a href=\"https:\/\/www.agenziaentrate.gov.it\/portale\/web\/guest\/aree-tematiche\/canone-tv\/casi-di-esonero\/cittadini-che-non-detengono-tv\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">payment exemption form<\/a> with Italy\u2019s tax office <em>Agenzia delle Entrate<\/em>\u00a0by January 31st of each year.<\/p>\n<p><strong>March 17th<\/strong>: Deadline for employers to file employees&#8217; earnings. This involves filling out and submitting the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.agenziaentrate.gov.it\/portale\/web\/guest\/certificazione-unica-2024\/infogen-certificazione-unica-2024\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Certificazione Unica<\/em><\/a> (Unified Certification).<\/p>\n<p>Employers must file earnings of both salaried employees and self-employed workers (partita Iva holders) every year, though the deadline for filing the self-employed workers&#8217; earnings declaration is October 31st (see below).<\/p>\n<p><strong>April 30th<\/strong>: Deadline for the yearly VAT declaration for businesses and self-employed workers (<em>partita Iva<\/em> holders).\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Barring some exceptions, such as taxpayers on flat-rate or other special schemes, those with a <em>partita Iva<\/em> are required to file an annual <a href=\"https:\/\/www.agenziaentrate.gov.it\/portale\/web\/guest\/iva-2024\/infogen-iva-2024\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Dichiarazione IVA<\/em><\/a> (VAT declaration) for the previous calendar year.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>This means filling out and submitting the <em>Modello Iva Annuale<\/em>, which outlines the amount of Iva (Italy&#8217;s value-added tax or VAT) owed by or refundable to businesses for the previous year.<\/p>\n<p>If a <em>partita Iva<\/em> holder owes VAT, they\u2019ll have to make payments by certain deadlines.<\/p>\n<p><strong>June 16th<\/strong>: This is the tax deadline property owners need to know about.<\/p>\n<p>Italy\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thelocal.it\/20240614\/imu-who-has-to-pay-italys-property-tax\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Imposta Municipale Unica<\/em><\/a> (Unified Municipal Tax, or IMU), is generally owed by owners of: agricultural land (<em>terreno agricolo<\/em>), building land (<em>terreno\u00a0fabbricabile<\/em>), private homes other than the owner\u2019s main residence (or<em> prima casa<\/em>), and luxury dwellings (<em>case di lusso<\/em>).<\/p>\n<p><strong>READ ALSO: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thelocal.it\/20240614\/imu-who-has-to-pay-italys-property-tax\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">IMU: Who has to pay Italy\u2019s property tax?<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re a foreign resident owning property in the country, you\u2019ll have to pay IMU on it.<\/p>\n<p>The June deadline marks the first instalment, with the other payment due by December 16th.<\/p>\n<p><strong>June 30th<\/strong>: Barring <a href=\"https:\/\/www.agenziaentrate.gov.it\/portale\/web\/english\/paying-personal-income-tax\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">some exceptions<\/a>, personal (Irpef) and corporate (Ires and Irap) income taxes are paid in two instalments in Italy.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The first instalment is due by June 30th.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In all cases, payment must be made through <a href=\"https:\/\/www.agenziaentrate.gov.it\/portale\/web\/guest\/schede\/pagamenti\/f24\/cosa-f24\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>modello F24<\/em><\/a> (form F24). The Italian tax office offers guidance (in Italian) on how to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.agenziaentrate.gov.it\/portale\/web\/guest\/schede\/pagamenti\/f24\/casi-frequenti-f24\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">fill out<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.agenziaentrate.gov.it\/portale\/web\/guest\/schede\/pagamenti\/f24\/come-effettuare-versamenti-f24\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">submit<\/a> the form.<\/p>\n<p><strong>September 30th<\/strong>: This is the main tax filing deadline for the majority of taxpayers in Italy.<\/p>\n<p>Italy has two types of income tax declaration form: generally speaking, employees and retirees use <em><strong>modello 730<\/strong><\/em> (form 730), whereas the self-employed, people with sources of income other than employment or pension (known as <em>redditi diversi<\/em>), and taxpayers who are not resident in Italy use the <em>modello redditi persone fisiche<\/em> (&#8216;natural persons\u2019 income form&#8217;).<\/p>\n<p>Taxpayers using <em>modello 730<\/em> for their yearly tax returns have until September 30th to complete and submit the document with Italy&#8217;s tax office.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The window to submit the form generally opens in late May, but the exact date for 2025 hasn\u2019t been announced yet.<\/p>\n<p><strong>October 31st<\/strong>: People using the <em><strong>modello redditi persone fisiche<\/strong><\/em> (&#8216;natural persons\u2019 income form&#8217;) for their yearly tax returns have until October 31st to submit the form with Italy\u2019s tax office.<\/p>\n<p>As is the case for form 730, the window to submit the persone fisiche form generally opens in May, but the exact date for 2025 hasn\u2019t been announced yet.<\/p>\n<p><strong>October 31st<\/strong>: Employers must submit the <em>Certificazione Unica<\/em> for self-employed workers\u2019 earnings by October 31st.<\/p>\n<p><strong>December 1st<\/strong>: The second instalment of personal and corporate income taxes (see above) is due by December 1st.<\/p>\n<p>The deadline usually falls on November 30th, but will be moved to December 1st in 2025 due to November 30th being a Sunday.<\/p>\n<p>Payments must be made via <a href=\"https:\/\/www.agenziaentrate.gov.it\/portale\/web\/guest\/schede\/pagamenti\/f24\/cosa-f24\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>modello F24<\/em><\/a> (form F24).<\/p>\n<p><strong>December 16th<\/strong>: The second instalment of Italy\u2019s property tax IMU is due.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>Please note that The Local cannot provide advice on personal tax issues.
