Online gaming may be the next step.<\/strong><\/p>\n<div id=\"post-350093\">\n<p>On 13 January, the Thailand cabinet approved a bill that would legalise entertainment complexes with gaming in principle. The measure now heads to parliament.<\/p>\n<p>Prommin Lertsuridej, secretary general to Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra, says the legislation could become law within seven to nine months. The industry is expected to <a href=\"https:\/\/igamingbusiness.com\/casino\/integrated-resorts\/under-new-pm-thailand-inches-toward-legal-casino-industry\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">help rebuild Thailand\u2019s sluggish economy<\/a>, which has yet to fully recover from the Covid-19 pandemic.<\/p>\n<p>If the bill passes, lawmakers plan to fast-track development of the complexes, which could open as early as 2029. That would give Thailand a leg up on Japan, which expects to open its first casino resort, MGM Osaka, in 2030.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-tourism-booster\">Tourism booster<\/h2>\n<p>A 2023 government study found that entertainment complexes could\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2024-08-18\/thailand-legalising-casino-gambling-entertainment-complexes\/104230552\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">boost tourism revenue<\/a>\u00a0by THB406.6 billion (\u00a39 billion\/\u20ac10.87 billion\/$12 billion) in the first year. They could also create up to 20,000 new jobs.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/Thailand PM expected to support legal casinos\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Five casinos<\/a> are expected to be licensed: two in Bangkok; one each in Chiang Mai and Phuket; and one in the Eastern Economic Corridor (Chachoengsao, Chonburi and Rayong provinces).<\/p>\n<p>According to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bangkokpost.com\/business\/general\/2940460\/7-major-investors-eyeing-thai-casino-projects\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Bangkok Post<\/a>, Prommin says seven global operators have expressed interest in a Thai casino licence. Macau concessionaire Melco Resorts and Entertainment has declared itself, announcing it will open a Bangkok office. <\/p>\n<p>Two other Macau operators, MGM Resorts and Galaxy Entertainment Group, are looking at the market, as is Malaysia\u2019s Genting Berhad.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-the-opposing-view\">The opposing view<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/krisdika.ocs.go.th\/web\/office-of-the-council-of-state\/background\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Thailand\u2019s Council of State<\/a> opposes passage of the Entertainment Complex bill. Council members are concerned that the draft focuses on gaming at the expense of broader-based tourism attractions.<\/p>\n<p>Thailand\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.xn--42cf9agqffa7bxaqibx1huetbb7fh32b.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Stop Gambling Foundation<\/a>\u00a0(SGF) calls the bill a watered-down version of the \u201cSingapore model\u201d that originally inspired it. Singapore\u2019s two integrated resorts feature deluxe appointments such as five-star hotels, theme parks, concert venues, restaurants and retail.<\/p>\n<p>Additionally, the SGF gripes that the bill offers scant details about non-gaming attractions, problem-gambling resources and taxation.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-online-gaming-on-the-table\">Online gaming on the table<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.scmp.com\/news\/asia\/southeast-asia\/article\/3294658\/thailand-pushing-ahead-it-grand-casino-plans-and-thaksins-all-it\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Reuters<\/a> reports that political bigwigs including Thaksin Shinawatra want to sweeten the pot with online gaming. <\/p>\n<p>The former prime minister (and father of the sitting PM) says igaming is already widespread. Some \u201cTwo million to four million Thai users (lose) about 500 billion baht per year,\u201d he said after Monday\u2019s session. \u201cIf we can tax 20%\u2026 we would get more than 100 billion baht per year.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/finance.yahoo.com\/news\/thailands-casino-boom-next-big-211731624.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Yahoo Finance<\/a> called a possible online component \u201cthe cherry on top\u201d.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/igamingbusiness.com\/casino\/thailand-cabinet-oks-casino-bill\/\" class=\"button purchase\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Read More<\/a><br \/>\n Marjorie Preston<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Thailand cabinet has signed off on legislation approving up to five entertainment complexes with casinos.
